What sealant do I use for a movement joint?
Use a polyurethane sealant for most concrete and masonry movement joints. It stretches and recovers with the joint. Silicone suits glass, aluminium, or wet areas where PU is not compatible. Match the sealant to the substrate and movement before you buy.
What backing rod do I put behind a sealant joint?
Put a foam backing rod in the joint before sealant. Closed-cell foam repels water and suits buried or wet joints. Open-cell foam suits dry internal joints. The rod sets sealant depth and stops it sticking to the back of the joint.
How deep should the sealant go in a movement joint?
Fill the joint to about half its width. A 20 mm joint takes 10 mm of sealant over the backing rod. Too deep and it tears when the joint moves. Too shallow and it splits on top. Check the data sheet for the ratio.
Can I use the same sealant for a construction and a movement joint?
Not always. A construction joint is where new concrete meets old or two pours meet. It needs a sealant that bonds to both faces. A movement joint moves and needs a sealant that stretches. Match the sealant to the joint.
Do I need a fire-rated backing or sealant?
Use fire-rated backing or sealant where the joint passes through a fire-rated wall or floor. Standard foam and sealant will not hold the fire rating. Fireban One and fire-rated backing rods carry that rating here. Check the fire rating you need first.
What do I do before I seal a construction joint?
Make the joint clean, dry, and sound. Remove dust, laitance, oil, and loose material. Check the width and depth so you order enough sealant and the right rod. If the joint is still curing or leaking, fix that first. Sealant won't fix unready joints.
