Description  

DOWSIL 890-SL Silicone Joint Sealant is a self-levelling, ultra-low-modulus silicone for horizontal pavement joints in concrete and at concrete-to-asphalt interfaces. It flows into uneven joint profiles without tooling and forms a flexible weather-resistant seal as it moisture-cures.

Made for horizontal pavement joints

Use 890-SL for new roadworks, concrete pavement repairs and remedial sealing where joint edges are irregular or locally spalled. Its pourable consistency helps fill properly prepared joints, while the ultra-low modulus reduces stress on the adjoining pavement faces as the joint opens and closes.

DOWSIL 890-SL or 888?

Choose DOWSIL 888 when a non-sag silicone is required for concrete-to-concrete pavement joints. Choose 890-SL for horizontal self-levelling applications, particularly where a concrete joint meets asphalt.

Installation considerations

Install in properly prepared, clean, dry pavement joints with suitable backing material and sealant depth. Allow for joint movement and ensure the sealant can cure through exposure to atmospheric moisture. Skin-over may occur in about an hour under standard conditions, but that does not mean the sealant has fully cured or that traffic can automatically be restored; follow the project's installation and reopening requirements.

Important limitations

  • Self-levelling behaviour makes this product unsuitable for joints where a non-sag bead is required.
  • Do not apply to wet or frost-covered substrates or during unsuitable weather.
  • Not for continuous water immersion or spill-containment applications.
  • For airfield runways and other specialist pavement applications, obtain Dow's project-specific guidance before specifying.

Ultra-low-modulus performance reduces stress on asphalt joint faces and suits irregular or spalled joints. Skins in one hour or less under standard conditions.
How To Apply  
Use on clean, dry concrete or asphalt pavement joints. Install backing rod to control sealant depth and prevent three-sided adhesion. Recess the sealant about 9.53mm to 12.7mm below the pavement surface, or deeper where future grinding is planned. For 6mm joints use 6mm sealant thickness and 9mm backer rod. For 13mm joints use 6mm sealant thickness and 16mm backer rod. For 25mm joints use 13mm sealant thickness and 32mm backer rod. The material is self-levelling and does not require tooling. Contact Dow for joints wider than 25mm.
Limitations and Safety Info  
Do not apply to wet or damp asphalt or concrete. Do not install during inclement weather. Not recommended for continuous water immersion. Do not use in totally confined spaces where atmospheric moisture cannot reach the sealant. Contact Dow before specifying for airfield runway applications. Do not use in spill containment areas. Not tested or represented for medical or pharmaceutical applications.
