Prepare & Prime Glazing Surfaces

Surface primers used before sealing and bonding in architectural glazing and aluminium work. The correct primer depends on the substrate finish, the sealant chemistry, and the manufacturer system — porous surfaces and non-porous metals and glass each take a different preparation product.Apply the primer to a clean, sound surface and...

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is surface preparation first?
Adhesion depends on a clean, sound, compatible surface. Primer 50A is documented for non-porous glass, aluminium, powder coat, and metals, while Everflex Supaprime and N40 Primer support porous and non-porous preparation before sealants. The correct preparation depends on the substrate and the sealant or adhesive system selected.
When is Primer 50A suitable?
Primer 50A is a fast-drying adhesion promoter for non-porous substrates. Its evidence lists glass, aluminium, powder coat, metals, plastics, fibreglass, stone, and painted surfaces. Apply it sparingly to a clean surface and observe the stated drying behaviour; it is not a substitute for cleaning or compatibility testing.
When is a porous-surface primer needed?
Everflex Supaprime and N40 Primer support priming on porous substrates and mixed building interfaces before sealants or adhesives. Use them where the substrate is absorbent or where the sealant manufacturer specifies a primer. Confirm the Product-specific instructions and complete an adhesion test where the evidence recommends one.
Is a primer always required on aluminium?
No universal primer rule is supported. Primer choice depends on the substrate finish, sealant chemistry, exposure, and manufacturer system. Primer 50A is documented for non-porous aluminium, while other Products describe different preparation systems. Confirm the Product-specific instructions and complete an adhesion test where the evidence recommends one.
What is missing from this preparation stage?
The published stage carries three primer Products but no dedicated glass-cleaning Product or glass-handling equipment. Full-catalogue evidence found a possible Sika Primer-3 N candidate for metals and sealant systems, but owner review is required before it becomes part of this journey.
