Use Primer 50A for: Enhancing adhesion on non-porous surfaces before applying sealants and adhesives.

Primer 50A: Adhesion Promoter for Difficult Surfaces

Primer 50A is a clear, alcohol-based surface treatment that significantly improves the bond strength of sealants and adhesives to non-porous substrates. Designed for surfaces like powder-coated metal, plastics, painted surfaces, glass, and fibreglass, it creates a micro-etched surface that allows maximum sealant grip. Primer 50A is ideal for preparing surfaces prior to the application of Adheseal’s range of polyurethane, MS, acrylic, or silicone products.

Key Features & Specifications

  • Promotes adhesion to smooth, glossy, and non-porous surfaces
  • Compatible with PU, MS, Silicone, and Acrylic sealants/adhesives
  • Wipe-on application — no mixing or curing time
  • Fast-drying and clear — no staining or visual residue
  • Used across construction, automotive, marine, signage, and glazing industries

Why Choose Primer 50A?

  • Critical for bonding to powder-coated aluminium and painted metals
  • Prevents adhesive failure on plastic or glazed surfaces
  • Recommended for structural and exposed sealing applications
  • Evaporates cleanly within seconds — apply and seal immediately

Best Practices: Do's & Don'ts

Do

  • Clean surface before application using a suitable degreaser
  • Apply using a clean lint-free cloth or primer pad
  • Allow to flash off (typically <1 min) before applying sealant
  • Use only on non-porous surfaces

Don't

  • Don’t use on absorbent substrates (e.g. concrete, timber)
  • Don’t over-apply — one thin pass is sufficient
  • Don’t allow primed surface to be contaminated before sealant application

Trade Use Cases: Applied in the Field

Sign Installer: Sealing on Powder-Coated Fascia

The Problem

Silicone sealant isn’t bonding well to powder-coated fascia around signage frame.

The Solution

Use Primer 50A to prepare the powder-coated metal before applying silicone, ensuring long-term adhesion.

Best Practice

Wipe with 50A and allow to flash off before sealing. Avoid re-contamination of surface.

Marine Fabricator: Gluing Plastic Trim to Fibreglass Hull

The Problem

PU adhesive fails to adhere to smooth marine-grade plastic components.

The Solution

Prime plastic and fibreglass contact areas with Primer 50A to boost adhesion.

Best Practice

Use 50A on both surfaces. Apply adhesive within minutes of priming.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 50A Primer on porous surfaces?

No, 50A Primer is specifically formulated for non-porous substrates only. For porous surfaces, such as unsealed concrete or timber, Adheseal 2001 primer is recommended. You can test porosity by applying a $1 coin-sized puddle of water; if it absorbs in under two minutes, the surface is porous.

How quickly does 50A Primer dry?

When applied sparingly as a thin wipe, 50A Primer dries completely within 15 seconds. This fast drying time allows for rapid turnaround on site, ensuring minimal delays before sealant or adhesive application. Over-application can prolong drying and affect performance.

Is surface abrasion required when using 50A Primer?

For most non-porous surfaces, thorough cleaning with Adheseal IPA cleaner before applying 50A Primer is sufficient. However, for extremely non-porous substrates like some powder coats, or when maximum performance and longevity are critical, light abrasion is recommended prior to cleaning and priming. This enhances adhesion significantly.

What are the safety considerations for 50A Primer?

50A Primer is a highly flammable liquid and vapour, classified as Dangerous Goods. Always use it in well-ventilated areas, away from ignition sources, and wear appropriate PPE including chemical goggles, nitrile gloves, and an apron. Do not use if the primer appears milky, as this indicates water absorption and reduced effectiveness.

Applications and benefits

Where 50A Primer is used, what it delivers, and who uses it
Application Key benefit Primary trades
Bonding sealants/adhesives to powder coat Ensures reliable, long-term adhesion where standard methods fail, preventing delamination and callbacks on challenging surfaces. Fabricators, Sign manufacturers, Automotive repairers
Enhancing adhesion on metals (excluding Lead & Copper) Provides a strong bond between sealants/adhesives and metals like aluminium, critical for structural integrity and weatherproofing. Sheet metal workers, Marine technicians, Caravan manufacturers
Prepping plastics, acrylics, and polycarbonates Improves bond strength for sealants/adhesives on common plastic substrates, reducing the risk of premature failure or lifting. Glaziers, Sign manufacturers, Automotive repairers
Adhesion promotion for painted or lacquered surfaces Secures sealants/adhesives to smooth, non-porous painted finishes, extending system life and maintaining aesthetic integrity. Painters, Installers, General builders

Applying Primer 50A: Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1. Clean the Surface

Ensure the surface is dry and free from grease, oil, dust, and any contaminants. Use an appropriate cleaner or degreaser.

  2. 2. Soak the Application Cloth

Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth or primer pad with Primer 50A. Do not oversaturate.

  3. 3. Wipe Onto Substrate

Apply Primer 50A in a single uniform stroke across the bonding area. Avoid circular motion or double-application.

  4. 4. Allow to Flash Off

Let the primer dry for approximately 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The surface should appear dry and clear before proceeding.

  5. 5. Apply Sealant or Adhesive

Apply the selected Adheseal sealant or adhesive immediately after flash-off. Do not delay or allow contamination.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Porous surfaces. Applying 50A Primer to porous substrates will not enhance adhesion and can lead to failure.
  • Contamination: Do not use if the contents appear milky. This indicates water absorption, rendering the primer ineffective, and it must be disposed of.
  • Metals: Not suitable for use on Lead or Copper.
  • Exposure: Do not expose the primed surface to thermal, mechanical, or chemical influences before the product has dried completely (approx. 15 seconds).

Safety and handling

Danger. 50A Primer is a highly flammable liquid and vapour. It causes serious eye irritation, may cause an allergic skin reaction, and is harmful if inhaled. It is toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

Personal protective equipment

Wear safety shoes, chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile rubber recommended), an apron, and chemical goggles or safety glasses with side shields. Ensure adequate ventilation or use appropriate respiratory protection if working in confined spaces.

Ventilation

Use only outdoors or in well-ventilated areas. Maintain air concentrations below occupational exposure standards. Local exhaust ventilation may be required in enclosed spaces.

First aid

  • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest. Seek medical treatment immediately.
  • Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with water and soap. Seek medical attention if irritation develops or persists.
  • Eye contact: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 20 minutes, holding eyelids open. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Seek medical advice after flushing.
  • Ingestion: DO NOT induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep head below hips to prevent aspiration. Rinse mouth and drink plenty of water. Obtain medical treatment immediately.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place between 10°C and 35°C, out of direct sunlight, and away from foodstuffs or incompatible materials. Keep containers tightly closed when not in use and away from all sources of heat and ignition. Dispose of contents and container in accordance with local, regional, and national regulations.

Substrate guide

Proper substrate preparation is critical for durable adhesion. 50A Primer is designed exclusively for non-porous surfaces to prevent bond failure.

Non-porous surfaces (e.g., Powder coat, Glass, Metal, Plastics, Painted surfaces, Fibreglass, Porcelain)

Surface prep: All surfaces must be structurally sound, dry, and clean. Remove all dust, loose material, oils, grease, and contaminants. For reliable performance, especially on powder coat or other difficult non-porous materials, clean the area thoroughly with Adheseal IPA cleaner. For maximum adhesion on extremely non-porous substrates, light abrasion of the surface before cleaning with IPA is recommended.

Primer: Required. Wipe the cleaned area with 50A Primer using a clean cloth, applying very sparingly. Allow to dry completely, typically within 15 seconds. Do not expose the primed surface to thermal, mechanical, or chemical influences before it has fully dried. Do not use 50A Primer if it appears milky, as this indicates water contamination and will compromise adhesion.
