Everflex PU240 Polyurethane Adhesive and Sealant

Everflex PU-240 is a high-modulus polyurethane sealant and adhesive built for jobs where ordinary sealants crack under pressure. It handles ±25% movement, bonds to aluminium, timber, masonry and glass, and cures to a tough, sandable, paintable finish. Shore A 35 hardness means it takes traffic and vibration without tearing apart. Not for structural glazing or joints constantly submerged in water. If the joint moves more than 25%, go to a higher-movement product.

  • Sealant may discolour copper & brass.
  • Do not expose the sealant to materials containing, cleaning agents, solvents and alcohol that may affect or discolour the sealant, particularly during product curing.
  • Not to be used on bituminous, natural rubber, EPDM rubber surfaces or in conjunction with any compound that might leach oils, plasticisers or solvents.
  • Avoid applying when moisture-vapor-transmission is emanating from the substrate and if air-entrapment can occur as this may cause bubbling.
  • White tends to discolour / yellow slightly when exposed to ultraviolet rays.

Frequently asked questions

Can Adheseal PU-240 be used for marine applications?

Yes, once cured, PU-240 is suitable for below waterline applications and re-caulking marine teak floors. Its high bond strength and flexibility handle constant movement and vibration in marine environments.

What surfaces should I avoid using Adheseal PU-240 on?

Do not use PU-240 in totally confined spaces, aquariums, or internal swimming pools with chlorine levels above 5ppm. It is also not for structural glazing, adhering mirrors, or on bituminous, natural rubber, or EPDM surfaces. Test stone for staining before use.

Is priming required before applying PU-240?

For optimal adhesion in critical applications like multi-story buildings, highly stressed joints, or water immersion, priming is necessary. Use Adheseal 50A for non-porous surfaces and Everflex Supaprime for porous substrates.

How much movement can Adheseal PU-240 accommodate?

PU-240 has a movement capability of +/- 25%. This high permanent flexibility allows joints to accommodate significant expansion and contraction without compromising the seal, maintaining long-term integrity.

Applying Everflex PU-240: Professional Protocols

  1. Surface & Joint Preparation

The foundation of a permanent seal is meticulous preparation. All surfaces must be structurally sound, stable, dry, and completely free of contaminants.

    Porous Surfaces (Concrete/Brick)

Mechanically remove all dust, laitance, and friable material. Ensure concrete has cured for at least 28 days.

    Non-Porous Surfaces (Metal/PVC)

Use a two-wipe process with a clean, lint-free cloth and a suitable solvent (e.g., Xylene) to remove all oils and residue.

Pro Tip: For clean, sharp joint lines, mask the edges with a high-quality masking tape. Remove the tape within the sealant's skin time.
  2. Joint Design & Backing

Proper joint design prevents three-sided adhesion, allowing the sealant to move correctly. The sealant depth should be half the joint width (2:1 ratio).

    Controlling Depth

Use an open-cell foam backing rod that is 25% larger than the joint width. Push it into the joint to the required depth. If the joint is too shallow for a rod, apply a bond-breaker tape to the base of the joint.

Pro Tip: Take care not to puncture the skin of closed-cell backing rods, as this can cause outgassing and lead to bubbles forming in the uncured sealant.
  3. Application & Tooling

Apply between 5°C and 40°C. Cut the nozzle to the desired bead size, puncture the cartridge seal, and place it in a professional caulking gun.

    For Sealing

Cut nozzle at a 45° angle. Keep the nozzle in contact with both sides and push the sealant ahead of the nozzle to ensure the joint is filled completely, avoiding air entrapment.

    For Adhering

Cut nozzle at a 90° angle, then cut a "V" notch. Apply a triangular bead to one surface, then bring the two surfaces together, compressing the bead to a minimum of 2mm.

Timing: Tool the sealant within 5-10 minutes, before the skin forms. Use a moistened spatula for a smooth, professional concave finish.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Totally confined spaces, as the sealant requires atmospheric humidity to cure.
  • Not for: Aquariums or internal swimming pool applications, especially where exposure to high chlorine levels (above 5ppm) is expected.
  • Not for: Adhering mirrors or for structural glazing applications. Specific glazing silicones (e.g., N-80 or N-60) or mirror adhesives (e.g., Hi-Power/MS609) are designed for these tasks.
  • Not for: All stone types without a prior stain testing program. We recommend S100 for marble or granite after a stain test.
  • Risk of discolouration: May discolour copper and brass.
  • Incompatibility: Do not use on bituminous, natural rubber, EPDM rubber surfaces, or with any compound that might leach oils, plasticisers, or solvents.
  • Application conditions: Avoid applying when moisture-vapour-transmission is emanating from the substrate or if air-entrapment can occur, which may cause bubbling.
  • UV exposure: White colour may discolour or yellow slightly when exposed to ultraviolet rays. While UV may cause a matt finish and minor surface cracking to 0.5mm, this does not affect performance.

Safety and handling

Danger: May cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled (H334).

Personal protective equipment

Wear gloves (Nitrile Rubber suggested for intermittent contact), apron, and safety glasses. If inhalation risk exists, wear an organic vapour/particulate respirator meeting AS/NZS 1715 and AS/NZS 1716 requirements. Wash hands before eating, drinking, or smoking, and wash contaminated clothing before reuse.

Ventilation

Ensure ventilation is adequate to maintain air concentrations below exposure standards. Use only in well-ventilated areas, or with local exhaust ventilation if generating vapours or dust.

First aid

  • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest. Consult a doctor if symptoms persist.
  • Skin contact: Immediately wash with soap and water and rinse thoroughly.
  • Eye contact: Rinse opened eye for several minutes under running water. Then consult a doctor.
  • Ingestion: If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Seek medical advice.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool, dry place between 10ºC and 35ºC in original packaging. Shelf life is 12 months. Dispose of in an incinerator for hazardous waste according to local and state regulations.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation and priming are critical for reliable adhesion and long-term performance.

Non-porous substrates

Includes aluminium, stainless steel, powder-coated metals, PVC, and glazed tiles.

Surface prep: Lightly roughen the surface with a fine abrasive pad. Clean thoroughly using Xylene with a two-wipe process, ensuring cloths are changed frequently to remove all contaminants.

Primer: Optional for many applications, but Adheseal 50A surface prep is recommended for optimal adhesion in critical, high-performance conditions. Apply and allow 30 minutes to 2 hours flash-off before sealant application. Always conduct an adhesion test for metals like copper, brass, and titanium-zinc, and plastics like PVC.

Porous substrates

Includes concrete, masonry, brick, and cement-based renders or mortars.

Surface prep: Surfaces must be structurally sound, dry, and free from dust, oils, grease, curing compounds, and any loose material. Concrete must be cured for at least 28 days to prevent delamination. Substrate must be free from surface water and continuous dampness.

Primer: Optional for many applications, but Everflex Supaprime is recommended for optimal adhesion in critical, high-performance conditions. Apply by brush and allow 30 minutes to 2 hours flash-off before sealant application. Avoid excessive application to prevent puddling in the joint base.
