Which primer do I need for my substrate?
Porous substrates such as render, screed, and fibre cement need a porous-substrate primer. Dense or low-porosity substrates such as existing tiles or metal need a non-porous primer. Where residual concrete moisture must be blocked before a moisture-sensitive finish, use a moisture-barrier primer such as Megapoxy 154, Ardex WPM 300, or Mapeproof 1K.
Can I use the same primer for waterproofing and tiling?
Where the manufacturer specifies it, yes. Many waterproofing primers are also used in tiling and flooring systems. Always follow the membrane or adhesive manufacturer's primer schedule, because primer compatibility is system-specific.
Why use a moisture-barrier primer?
A moisture-barrier primer blocks residual vapour pressure rising from a concrete slab before it can damage a moisture-sensitive membrane, adhesive, or floor covering. It is required when a slab has high moisture content and the finish above cannot tolerate it.
How long after priming can I apply the membrane?
Follow the primer technical data sheet. Most primers require a flash-off or curing period before the membrane is applied. Applying the membrane too soon traps solvent or water under the film and weakens the bond.
Do non-porous substrates need priming?
Yes, but with a primer formulated to bond to dense surfaces. A standard porous-substrate primer will not key into a non-porous substrate. Use the non-porous primer named by the membrane system.
