Prepare & Prime Masonry

Prepare concrete, brick, blockwork, render and stone before repair, bonding, waterproofing or joint sealing. This stage covers surface primers, moisture-control primers and evidence-backed preparation treatments.

Check the Product information for the substrate, moisture condition and compatible next stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the preparation and priming stage?
Preparation and priming establish a clean, stable, and compatible surface for repair compounds, adhesives, membranes, sealants, or coatings. The live Products cover porous and non-porous substrates, damp or green concrete, masonry, brickwork, render, and vapour control. Select the grade from the Product evidence, surface condition, and required next stage.
Which Products help with damp masonry or green concrete?
Gripset E-60, Gripset Xpress H2O Plus, and Megapoxy 154 are Active moisture-control Products in this stage. Their evidence describes vapour or moisture control on damp masonry, brickwork, mineral substrates, or green concrete. Confirm the measured moisture condition, substrate limits, coat build, cure time, and compatible next material before use.
Do all masonry substrates need primer?
Not every substrate needs the same primer, and some systems specify a particular preparation method. The range includes porous-substrate, non-porous, universal, and moisture-control grades because absorption and surface condition vary. Clean and assess the surface first, then use the Product evidence to confirm whether priming is required for the repair, adhesive, membrane, sealant, or coating.
What is the difference between porous and non-porous primers?
Porous primers such as Everflex Supaprime and Gripset GP penetrate or stabilise absorbent building surfaces. Bond-bridge Products such as Eco Prim Grip, Gripset OP, and Gripset Xpress SP help later materials bond to dense or smooth surfaces. Do not select by name alone; confirm the substrate and compatible system in the Product evidence.
Can I use any primer before any masonry Product?
No. A primer must be compatible with the substrate and the Product applied after it. A sealant primer, moisture barrier, membrane primer, and textured bond bridge serve different purposes. Check the next repair compound, adhesive, membrane, sealant, or coating instructions, then select only a primer that the system supports.
