RLA Penapatch HB80 Mortar

Penapatch HB80 is a high-strength structural repair mortar for concrete and masonry that builds up to 100 mm vertical and 180 mm horizontal in a single pass. At 68 MPa compressive strength after 28 days, it outperforms the concrete it's replacing, and the shrinkage compensation keeps it tight long-term. Mix it right, 3.6 litres per 20 kg bag in a forced-action mixer, and it goes on vertical, overhead, or horizontal without formwork headaches.

When spalling concrete or damaged masonry threaten structural integrity, a quick patch is not enough. You need a lasting rebuild. Penapatch HB80 delivers the high-strength, high-build repair that restores concrete and masonry to its full capacity, ensuring long-term durability and protection against re-deterioration. It's about getting the repair right, the first time.

Why this product exists

Penapatch HB80 was engineered for demanding structural concrete and masonry remediation. It provides a rigid, shrinkage-compensated mortar that builds thick sections in a single pass. This ensures critical repairs on vertical, overhead, and horizontal surfaces are not just filled, but genuinely rebuilt. Its formulation guards against ongoing degradation from chlorides, carbon dioxide, and abrasion, which is critical for infrastructure with a long service life expectation.

The numbers that matter

  • Compressive Strength: 68 MPa at 28 days. This is not just a filler. Penapatch HB80 exceeds the strength of typical structural concrete, ensuring the repaired section performs under load.
  • High Build: up to 100 mm vertical, 180 mm horizontal. Fewer passes mean faster project completion. This high-build capability allows for substantial repairs without the need for intricate formwork on vertical and overhead applications.
  • Shrinkage Compensation: < 450 micro-strain at 56 days. Controlled shrinkage minimises cracking, ensuring the repair remains dimensionally stable and tenacious over time, preventing callbacks.
  • Abrasion Resistance: Wear Index of 120 (ASTM CS01-1984). Standard 40-50 MPa concrete has a wear index of 71. This significantly higher resistance means Penapatch HB80 stands up to heavy traffic and harsh environments, extending the life of the repair in exposed areas.

What it's like to use

Mixing requires a mechanical forced-action mixer with a high-shear spiral paddle, ensuring a consistent, lump-free mortar. Precisely control the water ratio to 3.6 litres per 20 kg bag; excess water reduces final strength and build. For general concrete and masonry, prime surfaces with RLA Rendergrip A. For damp or immersed conditions, use RLA Epilox Binder. If corroded steel reinforcement is present, clean to a bright condition and prime immediately with RLA Zinc Rich Primer before applying Penapatch HB80. Apply the mixed material by trowel or gloved hand, thoroughly compacting it into the primed substrate and around any exposed rebar. Maintain application temperatures between 5°C and 35°C. Proper curing with a suitable compound like RLA Curecon A is essential for optimal performance.

Where this product excels

  • Civil Construction: Performing high-build structural repairs on bridges, retaining walls, and other concrete infrastructure where strength and durability are paramount.
  • Concrete Remediation: Repairing damaged, spalled, or deteriorated concrete, including addressing corrosion of steel reinforcement, where low permeability protects against future attack.
  • Waterproofing Systems: Forming robust wall-floor junction coves on concrete roofs, particularly those intended for membrane-covered tiling, providing a rigid and dimensionally stable base.
  • Masonry Restoration: Adhering tenaciously to masonry surfaces for structural repairs where high compressive strength and abrasion resistance are required.

How it fits in a real system

Penapatch HB80 often functions as a critical structural component within multi-layered systems. For retaining wall waterproofing, for example, it can be applied as the primary repair material after an initial coat of a waterproofing membrane like Everflex VBS Bitumen Primer and an appropriate two-part epoxy primer. The repair mortar then receives a final application of waterproofing, ensuring a robust, sealed, and structurally sound system. This placement highlights its role as a core structural element, rather than a surface finish.

Choose this when

  • When the job demands high-strength structural repairs on vertical, overhead, or horizontal concrete and masonry.
  • When addressing concrete spalling or deterioration caused by corroded steel reinforcement.
  • When repairing concrete requiring low permeability and high resistance to chlorides or carbon dioxide attack.
  • When creating a durable wall-floor junction cove on concrete roofs beneath a waterproofing membrane.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Actively moving substrates or joints. As a rigid structural repair mortar, Penapatch HB80 is not designed for flexibility, and reflective cracking will occur. For flexible bond breakers, consider products like Adheseal PU25 Fast-Cure Polyurethane Sealant.
  • Not for: Applications less than 5 mm thick, except in very localised areas.
  • Not for: Concrete surfaces or substrates less than 21 days old.
  • Not for: Use outside the temperature range of 5°C to 35°C during application.

Penapatch HB80 is classified as a Hazardous Chemical. Consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for detailed information on safe handling, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and first aid procedures, including precautions against skin and eye irritation and respiratory effects.

Applying RLA PENAPATCH HB80: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Remove contaminants and weak material. Break out to a minimum 5 mm depth and create a mechanical key by scabbling or high-pressure water blasting. Clean and prime steel reinforcement as required.

    Concrete & Masonry

Prepare to sound substrate; for highly porous surfaces, pre-soak then remove excess water prior to priming.

    Reinforcement

Grit blast to bright metal and prime immediately with RLA Zinc Rich Primer.

Timing: Substrate age ≥21 days for new concrete.
Pro Tip: Protect prepared areas from dust and re-contamination before priming.
  2. Priming

Apply the correct primer and place HB80 while the primer is tacky.

    Standard

Use RLA Rendergrip A. If it dries before placement, re-apply and wait to tacky.

    Damp / Immersed

Use RLA Epilox Binder and place while tacky (not dry).

Pro Tip: Avoid over-wet primed surfaces to prevent interface slump.
  3. Mixing

Add 3.6 L water per 20 kg bag into a clean pail. Slowly add powder while mixing with a forced-action/high-shear mixer for 3–5 minutes to a smooth, cohesive mortar.

    Do Not

Do not hand mix; do not use free-fall mixers; do not exceed water dose; do not mix part bags.

Timing: Only mix what can be placed within the set time (initial set ~1.5 h @ 20 °C).
  4. Placement & Finishing

Place using a trowel or gloved hand. Thoroughly compact into the primed substrate and around reinforcement. Finish with a steel trowel; avoid over-working.

    Build Parameters

Vertical: 5–100 mm (up to 160 mm in small pockets with formwork). Horizontal: 10–180 mm.

    Spray Application

Wet-spray with suitable pump/nozzle; pre-mix to specified water dose.

Pro Tip: In hot/windy conditions, reduce open time and commence curing promptly.
  5. Curing & Overcoating

Cure according to good concrete practice using RLA Curecon A. HB80 may be overcoated with RLA protective/decorative coatings without removing the curing compound.

Timing: Protect from water/rain for 24 hours after application.
