When the job demands structural integrity in concrete, Megapoxy HT delivers. It forms high-strength, permanent bonds even between new and old concrete, resisting the toughest conditions. This hydrophilic epoxy gel handles demanding concrete repairs, horizontal steel anchoring, and holds firm in wet, submerged, or chemically aggressive environments like sewage treatment plants. It ensures your critical repairs and bonds outlast the substrate itself.

Why this product exists

Megapoxy HT is a 100% solids, solvent-free, and VOC-free hydrophilic epoxy gel adhesive. It was engineered to create exceptionally strong, permanent bonds, often superior to the concrete it joins. Its formulation provides resistance to hydrogen sulphide, making it reliable in challenging environments such as wastewater infrastructure. Megapoxy HT is also suitable for forming high-strength epoxy mortars when mixed with fine aggregates, providing versatility for various concrete and flooring applications.

The numbers that matter

  • A 36 MPa slant shear bond strength for new to old concrete bonding means the interface is stronger than the concrete itself. This ensures the structural integrity of composite concrete sections.
  • A cured compressive strength of 100 MPa provides superior load-bearing capacity for repaired concrete cracks and floors, outperforming most standard concrete mixes.
  • Tensile bond strength of 20 MPa to steel secures horizontal anchors reliably, preventing pull-out failures in critical applications.
  • With flexural strength and tensile strength both at 40 MPa, it resists bending and pulling forces, contributing to the long-term durability of floor repairs and other structural elements. A Shore D hardness of 70 minimum provides excellent surface durability.

What it's like to use

Accurate mixing is essential for Megapoxy HT. Combine 3 parts Part A to 1 part Part B by volume, then mix thoroughly. Incomplete or inaccurate mixing will compromise the cured properties. Once mixed, there is a 30-minute work time at 25°C, requiring efficient application. Ensure the minimum application temperature of 10°C is met for proper curing.

For concrete, surfaces must be clean, free from grease and oil, and have all surface laitance removed by mechanical abrasion (scabbling, grit blasting, grinding) or acid etching. Allow the concrete to dry for 24 hours, aiming for a surface-dry condition for maximum adhesion. Metal surfaces require grit blasting to AS CK 9.4 - 1964 Class 3 or mechanical abrasion to a clean, bright finish, followed by thorough degreasing. Wire brushing alone is insufficient. All existing coatings must be completely removed from surfaces to achieve optimal bond strength.

Where this product excels

  • New to Old Concrete Bonding: Forming permanent, high-strength bonds where new concrete needs to integrate structurally with existing concrete.
  • Concrete Crack and Floor Repairs: Providing structural repairs for damaged concrete floors and cracks, restoring integrity and load-bearing capacity.
  • Horizontal Steel Anchoring: Reliably anchoring steel into concrete in a horizontal orientation, with a design that allows air to escape during pouring.
  • Underwater and Splashzone Repairs: Its hydrophilic properties and resistance to hydrogen sulphide make it ideal for repairs and adhesion in wet, submerged, or corrosive aquatic environments.
  • Epoxy Mortars and Coatings: Used to create high-strength epoxy mortars when blended with fine aggregates, or as a durable coating for concrete surfaces.
  • Tactile Indicator Anchoring: Serving as a robust adhesive for installing tactile indicators on concrete surfaces, ensuring long-term adhesion.

How it fits in a real system

Megapoxy HT is frequently specified as a critical adhesive in waterproofing and tiling systems over concrete membranes. For instance, in a membrane-covered tiled concrete deck, it can be applied after a damp concrete primer and membrane like Everflex VBS and Dowsil 888 Silicone Joint Sealant. Here, Megapoxy HT functions as a high-performance adhesive, ensuring the tiled finish remains securely bonded to the prepared substrate. It also serves as the foundational first step in Tacktile Anchoring systems, directly bonding tactile indicators to prepared concrete.

Choose this when

  • When bonding new concrete to old concrete, especially where the bond strength must exceed that of the concrete itself.
  • For structural repair of cracked concrete or damaged concrete floors that require high compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths.
  • When anchoring steel horizontally into concrete, and reliable, high tensile bond strength is critical.
  • For repairs or bonding in wet conditions, submerged environments, or areas exposed to hydrogen sulphide, such as wastewater treatment plants.
  • When mixing high-strength epoxy mortars for flooring or concrete repairs.
  • For anchoring tactile indicators, where a durable and permanent adhesive is needed for the long term.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Bonding to coated surfaces without first completely removing the existing coating. Bond strength will be significantly inferior.
  • Not for: Vertical steel anchoring. For this application, Megapoxy H is the recommended product due to its specific rheology.
  • Not for: Applications requiring a flexible joint sealant. Megapoxy HT is a rigid adhesive and will not accommodate movement.
  • Not for: Metal surface preparation solely by wire brushing. This method provides minimal adhesion and is not satisfactory for critical bonds.

Megapoxy HT is a VOC-free formulation, contributing to healthier working environments. Part B is classified as a Class 8 Dangerous Good by Road & Rail and is a Schedule 5 Poison (Caution), requiring appropriate handling and storage according to regulations. Always consult the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for full health and safety information.

Choosing between Megapoxy HT and Megapoxy H

Megapoxy HT is a high-strength, rigid hydrophilic epoxy gel adhesive optimised for demanding conditions, particularly horizontal steel anchoring and wet environments. When the application involves vertical steel anchoring, consider Megapoxy H. Megapoxy H is specifically formulated with a non-sag rheology that holds steel in place against gravity during cure, making it suitable for overhead or vertical applications where Megapoxy HT's flow characteristics would be unsuitable.

Applying Megapoxy HT: Protocols & Best Practices

General Application Steps:
  1. Preparation: Ensure the substrate is prepared to the required standard as per the Adhesion & Preparation Guide.
  2. Mixing: Accurately measure 3 parts of Part A to 1 part of Part B by volume. Mix thoroughly with a slow-speed drill and paddle mixer until a completely uniform, streak-free grey colour is achieved. Inaccurate mixing will result in poor performance.
  3. Application: Apply the mixed gel using a brush, roller, or trowel. When used as a bonding adhesive for new concrete, apply at 1 to 1.5 litres per square metre and place the new concrete within 15 minutes.
  4. Curing: Protect the applied product from contaminants while curing. Allow for the minimum cure time based on the ambient temperature (e.g., 24 hours at 25°C) before subjecting the area to service or load.
Trade-Specific Scenario Guides:
For Remedial Contractors: Underwater Pylon Repair

The Engineering Challenge: Repairing spalled concrete on a bridge pylon within the tidal splash zone. The repair material must be applied to a permanently damp surface and cure underwater while resisting erosion and chloride attack.

The System-Based Solution with Megapoxy HT: After mechanically removing unsound concrete, apply Megapoxy HT directly to the saturated substrate as a bonding primer. Its hydrophilic properties will ensure it achieves a full bond. Immediately form and apply an epoxy mortar made by mixing Megapoxy HT with specified aggregates. The system cures to form a seamless, high-strength, impermeable patch.

Best Practice Note: Surface preparation is critical. Use high-pressure water blasting or mechanical abrasion to remove all marine growth and laitance to expose a sound, aggregate-filled concrete surface.

For Commercial Builders: Anchoring Structural Steel Columns

The Engineering Challenge: Securing base plates for structural steel columns to a concrete slab, requiring a grout that provides absolute load transfer and prevents any future movement or corrosion.

The System-Based Solution with Megapoxy HT: Use Megapoxy HT to create a high-strength epoxy mortar. After positioning and levelling the column base plate, pour the mortar into the formwork. The material's high compressive strength (100 MPa) and minimal shrinkage ensure full, void-free bearing, while its bond strength to steel (20 MPa) creates a monolithic connection between the column and foundation.

Best Practice Note: Ensure steel base plates are prepared by grit blasting to a Class 3 finish and degreased immediately prior to grouting to achieve maximum tensile bond strength.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Vertical steel anchoring. Megapoxy H is recommended for vertical steel grouting.
  • Not for: Application below 10°C.
  • Not for: Bonding to coated surfaces without complete removal of existing coatings; inferior bond strengths will result.
  • Caution: Deviation from the specified 3 Part A to 1 Part B mixing ratio will reduce physical properties and may lead to unsatisfactory cure or discolouration.

Safety and handling

Signal Word: Warning (Part A), Danger (Part B)

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation is essential for Megapoxy HT to achieve its documented bond strengths and ensure long-term performance.

Concrete

Surface prep: Concrete must be free from grease and oil. Clean with an industrial heavy-duty degreaser if required. Remove surface laitance by mechanical abrasion such as scabbling, grit blasting, or grinding. If mechanical methods are not feasible, acid etching can be performed: mix concentrated hydrochloric acid with an equal volume of water, spread at 0.5 litres per square metre, allow to react for 10 minutes, then wash thoroughly and scrub to remove loose sand. Allow the concrete to dry for 24 hours. For maximum adhesion, the concrete surface must be dry.

Primer: Not required.

Metal surfaces

Surface prep: Metals should be grit blasted to AS CK 9.4 - 1964 Class 3 finish. If grit blasting is not possible, mechanically abrade the surface to a clean, bright metal finish. Degrease the surface by flooding with an industrial-grade degreaser after abrasion. Wire brushing is not sufficient and will provide minimal adhesion.

Primer: Not required.

Coated surfaces

Surface prep: All existing coatings must be fully removed prior to bonding, as bonding to coated surfaces will result in inferior bond strengths compared to direct application to a prepared substrate. For painted concrete, flame-clean or mechanically treat with a scutching tool to remove all paint traces, then complete preparation by diamond grinding or scabbling. For painted or galvanised metals, use a good quality paint stripper followed by grit blasting or grinding to a bright metal finish.

Primer: Not required.
