Applying Mapegrout T40: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Step 1: Mortar Preparation

    Prepare the mix using a low-speed mechanical mixer. Do not mix by hand.

    Mixing Water per 25 kg Bag

    Trowel Application: Use 3.8 to 4.0 litres of clean water. Spray Application: Use 3.9 to 4.1 litres of clean water.

    Mixing Procedure

    Add the required water to the mixer first. Slowly add the 25 kg bag of Mapegrout T40 while mixing. Mix for 1-2 minutes, scrape down the sides and bottom of the mixer, and then mix for another 2-3 minutes until a completely homogenous, thixotropic paste is formed.

    Timing: The mortar remains workable for approximately 1 hour at +20°C.
    Pro Tip: For improved open-air curing and reduced shrinkage, add 0.25% Mapecure SRA additive at the end of the mixing phase.
  2. Step 2: Mortar Application

    Apply the mortar to the prepared, Saturated Surface Dry (SSD) substrate.

    Trowel Application

    Apply with a trowel or gauging trowel. The thixotropic mix allows application on vertical surfaces or ceilings in thicknesses up to 30-35 mm per layer without formwork.

    Spray Application

    Spray apply using suitable equipment (e.g., Turbosol, Putzmeister). This is ideal for large vertical surface repairs.

    Pro Tip: Ensure reinforcing bars have been pre-treated with Mapefer or Mapefer 1K. If a second layer is needed, apply it before the first layer has finished setting (within approx. 4 hours at +23°C).
  3. Step 3: Curing and Finishing

    Proper curing is critical to prevent surface cracks from rapid water evaporation, especially in hot or windy conditions.

    Water Curing

    Spray water on the surface 8-12 hours after application. Repeat this process every 3-4 hours for at least the first 48 hours.

    Curing Compound

    Alternatively, apply a curing compound like Mapecure E, Mapecure S, or Elastocolor Primer with a low-pressure pump after tamping the mortar.

    Pro Tip: If a smoothing layer or paint is to be applied, Mapecure E/S must be removed by sandblasting. If Elastocolor Primer is used, Elastocolor Paint can be applied directly. Surfaces can also be skimmed with Monofinish, Mapefinish, or Planitop 200.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Repairing structures subject to high compressive loads, high impact, or abrasion. For these, use Mapegrout Thixotropic or Mapegrout T60.
  • Not for: Pumping over long distances or with large pumping heads; use Mapegrout Easy Flow.
  • Not for: Smooth concrete surfaces. Surfaces must be thoroughly roughened and reinforced if necessary.
  • Not for: Anchoring applications; use Mapefill or Mapefill R.
  • Not for: Pouring or pumping into formwork; use Mapegrout Hi-Flow.
  • Not for: Mixing with additional cement or admixtures.
  • Not for: Adding water once mixing has begun to set.

Safety and handling

Personal protective equipment

Wear close fitting safety goggles; do not use eye lenses. Wear clothing that provides comprehensive skin protection, such as cotton, rubber, PVC, or viton. Use protective gloves, with nitrile gloves (1.3 mm, 480 min breakthrough) suggested, or polychloroprene, butyl rubber, or fluorinated rubber options.

Ventilation

Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Use localized ventilation system to avoid inhalation of dusts and mists.

First aid

  • Inhalation: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. Consult a doctor immediately.
  • Skin contact: Immediately take off contaminated clothing and wash with soap and plenty of water. Obtain immediate medical attention. If irritation or rash occurs, get medical advice/attention.
  • Eye contact: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing, then consult an ophthalmologist immediately. Protect the uninjured eye.
  • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately, showing the SDS and hazard label.

Storage and disposal

Store in a well-ventilated place, keeping the container tightly closed. Keep away from food, drink, and feed. Dispose of contents and containers in accordance with applicable regulations. Do not allow product to enter drains or waterways.

Substrate guide

Proper substrate preparation is critical for Mapegrout T40 to achieve its documented mechanical strengths and adhesion, preventing premature failure of the repair.

Existing concrete surfaces

Surface prep: Remove all degraded and loose concrete until a solid, resistant, and rough substrate is exposed. Any previous repair materials that are not fully bonded must be removed. Sandblast the concrete and any reinforcing bars to remove dirt, rust, cement laitance, grease, oil, varnish, or old paint. Saturate the concrete with water, then wait for excess water to evaporate. Use compressed air if needed to eliminate free water before application.

Primer: Not required for the concrete itself. However, reinforcing bars must be treated with Mapefer or Mapefer 1K before Mapegrout T40 application to prevent corrosion and ensure bond.
