Which sealant should I use on a caravan roof seam?
PU50. It bonds roof panels, sandwich panels and solar panels on motor homes and caravans, and seals bolted lap joints. It takes weather exposure and joint movement. Design the joint, prepare the surfaces, then apply.
What does N40 sealant stick to?
Aluminium, fibreglass, glass, timber and laminated materials. N40 is a flexible silicone used in vehicle fabrication and fitout. It suits non-porous joints that stay flexible. It will not take paint once cured.
What is Hi-Flex 60 for?
Joints that move. Hi-Flex 60 is a high-movement hybrid for automotive assembly, aluminium fabrication, fibreglass, rubber and panels. It handles movement of about plus or minus 25 percent, so it suits seams that flex in service.
How do I prepare a seam before sealing?
Clean, dry and free of grease, dust and old sealant. Use backing rod to set the joint depth where the gap is deep. Apply primer only where the product sheet asks for it. Tool the bead before the skin forms.
Can I paint over these sealants?
Some, not all. PU50 and Hi-Flex 60 accept paint once fully cured. N40 is a silicone, and silicone repels paint. If the seam must be painted, choose the polyurethane or hybrid and check the product sheet first.
