For sealing non-moving construction joints in underground structures, basements, tunnels, and retaining walls, Pasco Aquastop provides a permanently active, swelling seal that prevents water migration under hydrostatic pressure. This hydrophilic polymer rubber waterstop is designed to replace conventional PVC waterbars in concrete joints, eliminating the need for seam welding and split forming.

How it works

Aquastop contains sodium bentonite, a clay structured with tightly packed, charged microscopic platelets. When water contacts the joint, molecules are attracted to these positive and negative charges, wedging between the platelets and causing them to swell. This controlled expansion forms an impermeable barrier. As hydrostatic pressure increases, the clay platelets compact to create a tighter, self-healing pressure seal that fills small voids and cracks in the concrete.

Numbers that matter

  • 100% to 300% expansion: Swells on contact with water to fill joints and irregular concrete contours (expansion is subject to water quality, temperature, and storage conditions).
  • >70m hydrostatic head resistance: Withstands extreme water pressures in deep underground stations, pits, and box culverts, remaining unaffected after 25 wet and dry cycles.
  • 75mm minimum concrete cover: Requires fully confined installation with at least 75mm of concrete depth to the exterior wall surface to prevent damage from expansion forces.
  • >450% elongation: Highly flexible polymer rubber base that contours around penetrations, pile caps, and irregular concrete surfaces without tearing.
  • 19mm x 25mm profile: Supplied in lightweight 5-metre rolls for direct butt-end joining, creating a continuous waterstop without overlaps.

Where to use it

Aquastop is suitable for vertical and horizontal non-moving concrete construction joints, precast panels, and around penetrations, including:

  • Single and multi-pipe penetrations: Installed around the outer diameter of pipes, sleeves, and block-out box constructions.
  • Pile caps and grade beams: Wrapped around reinforcement bars, I-beams, and construction joints above the waterproofing layer.
  • PVC waterbar transitions: Placed on the interior side of an existing PVC waterbar with a minimum 7.5cm direct-contact overlap.
  • Irregular surfaces: Pressed directly into concrete cavities and minor depressions to eliminate gaps behind the waterbar.

Limitations

  • Do not use as an expansion joint sealant.
  • Standard Aquastop is designed for uncontaminated groundwater. If saltwater, organic contaminants, or severe groundwater chemicals are present, consult Pasco before installation.
  • Do not pre-hydrate or submerge the waterstop in water. If the material becomes hydrated prior to concrete placement, it must be allowed to dry completely.
  • Aquastop is not self-adhering and must be secured using Aquastop adhesive or mechanical fasteners.

Installation process

All concrete surfaces must be clean, structurally sound, and free of standing water, form release agents, curing compounds, and dirt. Brush-apply Aquastop adhesive along the concrete surface to the width of the waterbar (1 litre covers approximately 30 metres). Press the waterstop firmly into the adhesive while it is still tacky, typically within 10 to 15 minutes, then remove the release paper. If the adhesive dries before application, reapply. Ensure vertical sections are secured at the highest coil end, and butt-join all roll ends tightly together to maintain a continuous seal.

Frequently asked questions

Can Aquastop be used in potable water tanks?

Yes, Aquastop is safe for use in potable water tanks. It is certified non-toxic, making it suitable for contact with drinking water.

Is Aquastop suitable for expansion joints?

No, Aquastop is not designed for expansion joints. It is engineered to seal non-moving construction joints, where it expands to create a permanent pressure seal.

How much hydrostatic pressure can Aquastop resist?

Aquastop can withstand hydrostatic head up to 70 metres. This performance is verified over 25 wet/dry cycles, ensuring long-term resistance.

How does Aquastop perform on irregular concrete surfaces?

Aquastop is compressible and malleable, allowing it to conform to irregular contours. It fills minor cavities and cracks, ensuring a continuous seal without leaving gaps.

Applications and benefits

Where Pasco Aquastop is used, what it delivers, and who uses it
Application Key benefit Primary trades
Sealing non-moving concrete construction joints Prevents water ingress by forming an impermeable, self-healing seal with up to 300% expansion and 70m hydrostatic head resistance. Concreters, Waterproofers, Civil Contractors
Sealing around pipe and utility penetrations Conforms to irregular shapes and fills voids, providing a continuous, positive seal against water infiltration. Plumbers, Civil Contractors, Waterproofers
Waterproofing precast concrete panel joints Compressible and malleable for good contact, eliminating the need for traditional waterbar welding or split forming. Precast Installers, Concreters
Sealing joints in potable water structures Non-toxic formulation makes it safe for use in tanks and reservoirs designed for drinking water storage. Civil Contractors, Tank Builders
Waterproofing underground structures (basements, tunnels) Permanently active system provides a durable, long-term barrier against groundwater pressure, unaffected by wet/dry cycling. Civil Contractors, Waterproofers

How to apply Aquastop Hydrophilic Construction Joint Waterstop:

  1. Prepare the surface: Ensure surfaces are clean and free of contaminants.
  2. Apply adhesive: Brush Aquastop adhesive along the concrete surface.
  3. Install Aquastop: Remove release paper and press Aquastop firmly to the surface.
  4. Butt join ends: Tightly butt join ends to form a continuous waterstop.
  5. Secure: Use mechanical fasteners if needed, especially on vertical sections.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Expansion joints. Aquastop is designed for non-moving construction joints only.
  • Contaminated water: Standard Aquastop is not for use where groundwater is contaminated with saltwater or organic chemicals. Consult Pasco Construction Solutions for specific recommendations in these conditions.
  • Confined spaces: Must be fully confined in concrete with a minimum of 75 mm cover to ensure proper expansion and sealing performance.
  • Pre-hydration: Do not pre-hydrate or submerge in water before concrete placement. If the material does become hydrated, allow it to dry completely before pouring concrete.

Safety and handling

This material is not classified as hazardous according to Safe Work Australia GHS 7. No known hazards are associated with normal use.

Personal protective equipment

Wear safety shoes, overalls, nitrile rubber gloves for intermittent contact, and safety glasses.

Ventilation

Ensure ventilation is adequate to maintain air concentrations below Exposure Standards. Use in well-ventilated areas, especially when generating dust.

First aid

  • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. If effects persist, seek medical advice.
  • Skin Contact: Flush skin and hair with running water. If irritation occurs, seek medical assistance.
  • Eye Contact: Wash eyes immediately with water. Seek medical advice.
  • Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give a glass of water. Seek medical advice.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight and away from foodstuffs. Keep containers closed and upright. Shelf life is 12 months minimum when stored below 25°C. Dispose of material and containers according to local regulations.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation is crucial for Aquastop to achieve its documented waterproofing performance and to prevent product failure.

Concrete

Surface prep: Ensure surfaces are structurally sound and clean. Remove all dirt, dust, grease, paint, oil, form release agents, and curing compounds. Standing water must be removed before application.

Primer: Required. Apply Aquastop adhesive by brush along the concrete, covering the width of the waterstop strip. The waterstop should be applied while the adhesive is still tacky (within 10-15 minutes).
