Megapoxy E

Megapoxy E is a two-part epoxy system built for potting instrument transformers, coils and sensitive electrical components that can't afford to fail. Dielectric strength hits 19 KV/mm, compressive strength reaches 100 MPa, and you pick your hardener based on the job, Hardener E gives you 60 minutes working time at 25°C, Hardener 155 drops to 30 minutes when you need faster turnaround. Both cure fully in 24 hours. It handles service temps up to 150°C, so it's not your general-purpose adhesive.

Description

When critical electrical and electronic components demand robust protection, Megapoxy E delivers. It's the high-impact epoxy system engineered for precise encapsulation and casting, ensuring components like instrument transformers and coils withstand stress and maintain integrity. The result is reliable electrical and dielectric performance, even under challenging temperature conditions.

Why this product exists

Megapoxy E was formulated to meet the rigorous demands of electrical and electronic industries. It provides reliable encapsulation and casting for sensitive components that require superior electrical insulation, dielectric properties, and mechanical strength. Its two hardener options allow it to perform consistently across a range of operating temperatures, from ambient to significantly elevated.

The numbers that matter

For applications where electrical integrity is paramount, Megapoxy E delivers a dielectric strength of up to 19 KV/mm. This ensures components are protected against electrical breakdown. Its ultimate compressive strength reaches 100 MPa, combined with a bond strength of 20 MPa, providing structural resilience against impact and mechanical stress. The choice between Hardener E and Hardener 155 extends service temperature capabilities up to 150°C, meaning the encapsulated components maintain performance under high thermal loads.

What it's like to use

Megapoxy E requires precise mixing ratios for optimal performance, specified by both weight and volume. Hardener E provides a 60-minute working time at 25°C, while Hardener 155 shortens this to 30 minutes, allowing for faster turnaround when needed. Both systems achieve minimum cure within 24 hours at 25°C. For best adhesion, surfaces must be pre-treated by cleaning with acetone or isopropyl alcohol; wire brushing is insufficient. Clean mixing implements and tools with Megapoxy Thinners immediately after use.

Where this product excels

  • Electrical Component Encapsulation: Ideal for potting instrument transformers, lighting transformers, and small power transformers, ensuring reliable electrical insulation and protection.
  • Coil and Solenoid Casting: Provides high impact resistance and mechanical support for coils and other magnetic components against vibration and physical impacts.
  • Electrical Switchgear Casting: Forms robust, long-term castings for switchgear components, maintaining structural and electrical integrity.
  • High-Temperature Assemblies: When paired with Hardener 155, it ensures continued performance in elevated temperature electrical assemblies up to 150°C.

Choose this when

  • When you need to encapsulate or cast electrical and electronic components that require high dielectric strength.
  • When components demand superior mechanical protection against impact and vibration.
  • When the application requires sustained performance at elevated operating temperatures, up to 150°C.
  • When precise, high-strength bonding and casting for electrical assemblies are critical.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Crack injection resin. For concrete crack injection, consider Megapoxy H.
  • Not for: General epoxy surface sealing. Megapoxy PF is designed for these applications.
  • Not for: Non-critical, general-purpose bonding or repairs where its specialized electrical properties are not required.
  • Not for: Structural load-bearing applications unless specifically engineered and verified for that purpose.

Megapoxy E is classified as a hazardous chemical by Safe Work Australia GHS 7, indicating skin irritation and potential for allergic skin reactions. Both Part A and Part B carry specific hazard and precautionary statements, underscoring the need for appropriate personal protective equipment during handling.

Megapoxy E vs. Other Megapoxy Epoxies

Megapoxy E is a specialised, high-performance epoxy system explicitly designed for the rigorous demands of electrical and electronic component encapsulation and casting. This sets it apart from general-purpose epoxies like Megapoxy 34, Megapoxy 36, or Megabond, which may excel in broader structural bonding or repair tasks. Megapoxy E's formulation prioritises electrical insulation, dielectric properties, and mechanical strength, specifically catering to critical electrical assemblies and elevated temperature service that other epoxies may not be formulated to handle.

Common Questions
x

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum service temperature for Megapoxy E?

Megapoxy E's maximum service temperature depends on the hardener used. With Hardener E, it is rated for service up to 80°C. When paired with Hardener 155, it can withstand service temperatures up to 150°C, offering higher thermal performance.

Is surface preparation critical for electrical encapsulation with Megapoxy E?

Yes, proper surface preparation is critical for strong adhesion and preventing electrical failure. All surfaces must be cleaned with acetone or isopropyl alcohol to remove impurities. Wire brushing is specifically noted as inadequate.

Can Megapoxy E be used for general purpose bonding?

Megapoxy E is specifically formulated for electrical and electronic industries, providing superior electrical and dielectric properties along with high mechanical strength. Its primary applications are encapsulation of transformers, coils, and casting switchgear components, not general-purpose bonding.

How long does Megapoxy E take to cure?

Both hardener variants, Hardener E and Hardener 155, require a minimum curing time of 24 hours at 25°C before components can be put into service. The working time at 25°C varies from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the hardener.

Warning: Megapoxy E Part A is a skin and eye irritant and may cause allergic skin reactions. It is toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
Danger: Megapoxy E Part B (both Hardener E and Hardener 155) causes skin irritation and serious eye damage. Part B with Hardener 155 is also harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin, and causes severe skin burns.

Personal protective equipment

Wear safety shoes, protective clothing, gloves (nitrile rubber recommended), safety glasses or eye/face protection, and a suitable respirator to avoid breathing vapours, mists, or aerosols.

Ventilation

Natural ventilation is adequate under normal use conditions. Ensure eyewash stations and safety showers are accessible near the workstation.

First aid

  • General: If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre (Australia 131 126, New Zealand 0800 764 766).
  • Inhalation: Move affected person to fresh air. Keep warm and at rest. Seek medical advice if effects persist.
  • Skin contact: Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Flush skin and hair with running water for 15 minutes. Seek medical advice. For severe burns, transport to hospital.
  • Eye contact: Immediately irrigate with copious quantities of water for 15 minutes, holding eyelids open. Remove contact lenses if present. Urgently seek medical assistance and transport to hospital.
  • Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give a glass of water. Call Poisons Centre or Doctor immediately.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, out of direct sunlight, away from foodstuffs, incompatible materials, and ignition sources. Keep containers upright and closed. Part B hardeners must be stored locked up. Dispose of contents and container according to local, regional, national, and international regulations.

Suitable Substrates
x

Substrate guide

Achieving specified mechanical and electrical performance relies on correct surface preparation before encapsulation or casting.

Electrical components (transformers, coils, switchgear)

Surface prep: Remove all surface impurities, oils, and residues. Clean thoroughly with acetone or isopropyl alcohol. Wire brushing alone is not sufficient and will lead to poor adhesion.

Primer: Not required. Focus on solvent cleaning for optimal bond.
