When industrial operations require high-alumina ceramic tiles to protect steel or concrete from extreme wear and continuous temperatures up to 120°C, a standard adhesive won't last. Megapoxy 84 provides the specialised epoxy paste solution. It ensures those critical wear linings remain securely bonded, even under sustained heat, extending equipment lifespan and maintaining operational efficiency.

Why this product exists

Megapoxy 84 is specifically formulated as a two-component epoxy paste adhesive for environments where high-alumina ceramic tile linings are essential. Its existence is driven by the need for a robust, high-temperature bond for these wear-resistant tiles onto steel or concrete substrates. This includes critical applications like locking eccentric bushings in crushing machinery, where conventional adhesives would fail under thermal and mechanical stress.

The numbers that matter

Maximum Operating Temperature: 120°C continuous service. This is not an intermittent peak; this is the continuous service temperature Megapoxy 84 reliably withstands. It ensures tile linings remain fixed in industrial applications subject to sustained heat, preventing costly delamination and premature wear in hot process environments.

Compressive Strength: 120 MPa. This significant strength ensures the bond between the high-alumina ceramic tile and its substrate can resist the intense compressive forces and abrasive wear typical in heavy industrial and mining applications.

Flexural Strength: 55 MPa. Beyond sheer compression, the 55 MPa flexural strength confirms the adhesive's ability to handle bending and shearing stresses, which is critical for tile integrity on surfaces that might experience minor deflections or vibrations during operation.

Work Time: 30 minutes at 25°C. This controlled work time provides an adequate window for mixing, applying, and accurately positioning ceramic tiles over larger areas, particularly in a hot environment, before the product begins to set.

What it's like to use

Megapoxy 84 is designed for straightforward, two-component mixing and application. For optimal performance, combine the entire contents of Part B into Part A and mix thoroughly for a minimum of 3 minutes, ensuring all material from the sides and bottom of the container is incorporated. A precise 4 parts A to 1 part B ratio ensures the final cure achieves maximum strength. Apply the mixed paste to the prepared steel or concrete surface using a notched trowel, then firmly press the high alumina ceramic tiles into the adhesive bed, ensuring full contact. Cleanup of tools is best achieved immediately using Megapoxy Thinners and warm soapy water.

Where this product excels

  • Industrial Plant Wear Lining: For bonding high-alumina ceramic tiles to steel in industrial plants where continuous operating temperatures reach up to 120°C, preventing tile delamination in high-heat environments and extending the service life of equipment.
  • Mining Operations: Securing high-alumina ceramic tiles to concrete surfaces for wear protection in mining infrastructure, forming a strong, durable bond (120 MPa compressive strength) that withstands heavy abrasion and extends the service life of high-wear surfaces.
  • Crushing Machinery Component Fixation: Locking eccentric bushings in Symons Cone Crushers and other heavy crushing machinery, providing a rigid, high-strength bond that maintains component alignment under severe operational loads and vibration.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: General-purpose structural bonding where high-temperature resistance is not a primary requirement. This product's specialisation might be overkill, and other Megapoxy products could be a better fit.
  • Not for: Applications where continuous service temperatures exceed 120°C, as the adhesive's long-term performance and integrity will be compromised.
  • Not for: Bonding materials other than high-alumina ceramic tiles to steel or concrete, as its formulation is optimised for these specific substrates and conditions.

Specialised bonding vs. general structural applications

Megapoxy 84 is a highly specialised epoxy paste, distinct from Megapoxy's general-purpose structural epoxies like Megapoxy P1 or even the high-performance Megapoxy PM. While those products offer excellent structural strength for concrete, steel, and other substrates, Megapoxy 84 is engineered specifically for one critical task: reliably bonding high-alumina ceramic tiles to steel or concrete in continuous service up to 120°C. Its formulation is optimised for this niche, where consistent performance under sustained heat and abrasive wear is paramount, distinguishing it from adhesives not designed for high-temperature tile lining applications.

Frequently asked questions

What maximum temperature can Megapoxy 84 handle?

Megapoxy 84 is suitable for continuous exposure to temperatures up to 120°C after a full 72-hour cure. This thermal stability prevents adhesive degradation in demanding industrial settings, ensuring wear lining integrity.

Can Megapoxy 84 be used on unprepared steel surfaces?

No, steel surfaces must be cleaned to a "white metal" finish by grinding or grit blasting. Proper surface preparation is critical for achieving the specified bond strength and preventing premature lining failure.

How long does Megapoxy 84 take to cure before it can be put into service?

The adhesive will set after approximately 4 hours at 25°C. For full toughness and to withstand continuous service at its maximum operating temperature of 120°C, allow a minimum of 72 hours at 25°C.

Is Megapoxy 84 suitable for general-purpose tiling outside of industrial applications?

Megapoxy 84 is formulated specifically for high alumina ceramic tile linings in industrial, high-temperature, or high-wear environments. Its properties are overkill for standard tiling and it requires rigorous surface preparation not typical for general applications.

Applying Megapoxy 84: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation (The Critical Step)

A first-time-right result is impossible without correct prep. This product is engineered for adhesion to professionally prepared, clean, and dry substrates.

    Steel Substrates

Clean all steel to a 'white metal' finish. Use grinding or grit blasting to remove all rust, mill scale, and contaminants. The surface must be 100% clean and dry.

    Concrete Substrates

Scabble or grit blast concrete to remove the weak laitance layer. You must expose the solid, clean, and firmly held aggregate. Ensure all dust is removed.

    Tile Preparation

Ensure the bonding face of the ceramic tile is clean and grease free. Wipe with Megapoxy Thinners if necessary and allow to dry.

Timing: Ensure all prep is complete before mixing, as the 30-minute pot life starts once components are combined.
Pro Tip: Do not try to "make do" with a wire brush or acid etching. This adhesive's 120 MPa strength requires a mechanical profile that only blasting or grinding can provide.
  2. Mixing (Ensuring Full Strength)

Megapoxy 84 is a two-component system. Both parts must be thoroughly combined in the correct ratio to achieve the specified properties.

    Combining Components

It is highly advisable to mix the whole 2.5L kit at one time to avoid ratio errors. Add the entire contents of Part B (Blue Liquid) slowly into Part A (White Paste).

    Thorough Mixing

Using a putty knife or spatula, mix thoroughly for a minimum of 3 minutes. Continuously scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing container to ensure all material is incorporated. The final mix should be a uniform Pale Blue.

Timing: The 30-minute working time at 25°C begins now.
Pro Tip: Adding Part B slowly prevents splashing. Incomplete mixing is the number one cause of soft spots or cure failure. Do not rush this step.
  3. Application & Curing

Apply the mixed adhesive and bed the tiles, ensuring full contact for a void-free bond.

    Trowel Application

Apply the mixed Megapoxy 84 to the prepared substrate at a rate of approximately 1.25 litres per m². Spread evenly using a notched trowel.

    Bedding Tiles

Place the high alumina ceramic tiles onto the wet adhesive bed. Press firmly to ensure full, even contact of the tile surface and collapse the trowel ridges.

    Clean-up & Curing

Clean excess material and tools using Megapoxy Thinners and warm soapy water for a tidy finish. The product sets in ~4 hours at 25°C.

Timing: Crucial: The product develops toughness after 48 hours. Avoid all exposure to elevated temperatures during this initial period. Allow a full 72-hour cure before subjecting the surface to the 120°C maximum service temperature.
Pro Tip: While it's brittle at first, the toughness develops. Rushing the return-to-service before 72 hours will compromise the bond and lead to failure. Protect your work and your reputation by following the full cure schedule.

Product limitations

  • Minimum application temperature: Do not apply below 10°C; this can compromise cure and final performance.
  • Initial cure exposure: Avoid exposure to elevated temperatures for the first 48 hours. The product develops toughness gradually and is initially brittle.
  • Surface preparation: Not a forgiving adhesive for poorly prepared substrates. "White metal" or grit-blasted surfaces are essential for long-term bond strength.
  • Not for: Applications requiring continuous immersion unless specifically tested and approved.

Safety and handling

Danger: Megapoxy 84 Part B is corrosive and can cause severe skin burns and eye damage. Part A causes skin irritation and may cause an allergic skin reaction. Both parts are classified as Schedule 5 Poisons (Caution).

Personal protective equipment

Wear safety shoes, nitrile rubber gloves suitable for intermittent contact, and safety glasses. A suitable respirator should be worn if there is a risk of inhaling dust, vapours, mist, or aerosols. Ensure all PPE is appropriate for the task and risk assessment.

Ventilation

Natural ventilation is typically adequate under normal use conditions. For enclosed spaces or where vapours are likely, ensure increased ventilation or local exhaust is provided.

First aid

  • General: If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre (Australia 131 126, New Zealand 0800 764 766).
  • Inhalation: Move victim to fresh air. Keep at rest and warm until recovered. Seek medical advice if effects persist.
  • Skin contact: Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Flush skin and hair with running water for 15 minutes or until advised to stop. For Part B, immediately drench with water. If blistering or irritation occurs, seek medical assistance. Effects may be delayed.
  • Eye contact: Hold eyelids apart and flush eyes continuously with running water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses if present. Urgently seek medical assistance and transport to hospital. Part B is corrosive to eyes.
  • Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. DO NOT induce vomiting. Give a glass of water. Call Poisons Centre or Doctor immediately. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight and away from foodstuffs, incompatible materials (e.g., oxidising agents), and sources of heat/ignition. Keep containers upright and closed when not in use. Store Part B locked up. Dispose of material and containers in accordance with local, regional, national, and international regulations.

Substrate guide

Achieving a reliable, high-strength bond with Megapoxy 84 depends on meticulous surface preparation. The correct prep ensures optimal adhesion and prevents bond failure under service conditions.
