When a structural bond must hold, even under extreme impact or in persistent moisture, Megapoxy 69 provides the reliability needed. It handles critical connections between concrete, metal, timber, and stone with a strength that lasts. This product ensures structural integrity for jobs demanding unwavering performance, whether onshore or in marine environments.

Why this product exists

Megapoxy 69 is an epoxy structural adhesive formulated for heavy-duty applications where permanent, impact-resistant bonds are essential. Its non-sag gel consistency allows for effective use on vertical or overhead surfaces without slumping. Engineered for superior adhesion across diverse materials, it is ideal for civil engineering, marine construction, and structural timber applications. It also features very low VOC content, supporting healthier working conditions.

The numbers that matter

  • Bond strength to concrete: >3 MPa (ASTM D4541): This exceeds the typical tensile strength of concrete itself. The adhesive will not be the point of failure, ensuring the bond is stronger than the substrate it connects.
  • Ultimate compressive strength: 120 MPa: This high compressive strength means Megapoxy 69 can withstand significant direct pressure, making it suitable for load-bearing repairs and infills in concrete and masonry structures.
  • Tensile lap shear strength (steel to steel): 17 MPa: This value demonstrates the product's ability to create robust, load-transferring bonds between metal components, crucial for structural steel fabrication and repair.
  • Non-sag gel with 45-minute work time at 25°C: The gel consistency prevents material slump on vertical or overhead applications, while the extended work time allows for precise positioning and assembly of complex or large components before initial cure begins.

What it's like to use

Megapoxy 69 uses a simple 1:1 mix ratio by volume. It is critical to measure and mix both Part A and Part B thoroughly to ensure full cure and achieve the specified physical properties. Inaccurate mixing can lead to discolouration, incomplete curing, and reduced performance. The minimum application temperature is 10°C, and cure times vary significantly with temperature, ranging from 12 hours at 35°C to 48 hours at 15°C. For tool cleaning, use Megapoxy Thinners.

Surface preparation is paramount for optimal adhesion. Concrete substrates require mechanical abrasion such as scabbling, grit blasting, or grinding to remove laitance and create a sound profile. Acid etching is an alternative if mechanical methods are not possible, followed by thorough washing and 24 hours of drying. Metal surfaces must be grit blasted to AS 1627.2.2002 or mechanically abraded to bright metal, then degreased. All existing coatings must be removed for maximum bond strength. Always ensure substrates are dry.

Where this product excels

  • Civil Construction: For structural repairs and bonding of concrete and masonry, including infills, crack filling, and joining precast elements where a bond stronger than the concrete itself is required.
  • Marine Environments: Ideal for bonding and repairing components in boats, docks, and other marine structures, offering high strength retention and chemical resistance even in harsh saltwater conditions.
  • Structural Timber Joinery: Provides permanent, impact-resistant bonds for heavy timber construction, ensuring the long-term stability and integrity of critical joints.
  • Stone and Metal Fabrication: Used for the assembly of natural stone (granite, marble) and bonding various metals (steel, aluminium), including fibreglass components, where a non-sag, high-strength adhesive is necessary to hold materials in place during cure.

Choose this when

  • When creating structural bonds between dissimilar materials like metal, concrete, timber, or stone.
  • When the application demands extreme strength, impact resistance, and durability in marine or high-stress environments.
  • When working on vertical or overhead surfaces where a non-sag, paste-like adhesive is required to maintain position.
  • When the bond strength must surpass that of the substrate itself, such as bonding concrete to concrete.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Rapid-cure applications. Megapoxy 69 requires dedicated cure times dependent on temperature; it is not for immediate service.
  • Not for: Unprepared or coated substrates. Achieving full bond strength requires meticulous surface preparation, including mechanical abrasion or grit blasting, and removal of all existing coatings.
  • Not for: General-purpose, non-structural adhesion. This product is engineered for critical structural applications; using it for non-load-bearing, low-stress bonds may be overkill and less efficient.
  • Not for: Bonding to damp or wet surfaces. Optimal adhesion requires completely dry substrates.

Megapoxy 69 versus other Megapoxy P-Series epoxies

Megapoxy 69 is engineered for critical, heavy-duty structural bonding and repair requiring exceptional strength, impact resistance, and marine durability with a non-sag application. While other Megapoxy P-series products like Megapoxy PM, PF, P1, and HT offer robust epoxy solutions, Megapoxy 69 distinguishes itself when the project specifically demands superior structural performance under impact, in harsh marine conditions, and where a highly thixotropic, non-sag paste is essential for vertical or overhead work. It is formulated to create bonds that are often stronger than the materials they join, making it the choice for demanding structural integrity where fast cure or more general-purpose bonding might be insufficient.

Frequently asked questions

Can Megapoxy 69 be used for structural repairs in civil engineering?

Yes, Megapoxy 69 is specifically designed for structural bonding and repairs in civil engineering. It achieves an ultimate compressive strength of 120MPa and a bond strength to concrete of over 3MPa, making it suitable for demanding applications like concrete column repair and infills.

Is this epoxy suitable for vertical or overhead applications?

Yes, Megapoxy 69 is a non-sag gel. This creamy texture allows for effective application on vertical surfaces and overhead without slumping, maintaining consistent bond lines and fill volume.

What surface preparation is critical for metal substrates?

For optimal adhesion on metal, grit blasting to AS 1627.2.2002 is recommended. If grit blasting is not possible, mechanically abrade the surface to a clean, bright metal, then degrease thoroughly. Wire brushing alone is not sufficient and yields minimal adhesion.

Can Megapoxy 69 be applied over existing coatings?

No, for the documented high bond strengths, all existing coatings, paint, or galvanizing must be completely removed. Bonding directly to prepared substrates ensures superior and reliable performance.

Applying Megapoxy 69: Professional Protocol

  1. Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is non-negotiable for achieving the specified bond strength. All substrates must be structurally sound, clean, dry, and free of any contaminants.

    Porous Substrates (Concrete)

Mechanically abrade by grinding or scabbling to remove laitance and expose a clean surface. Remove all dust.

    Non-Porous Substrates (Metal)

Grit blast or grind to a bright metal finish, then immediately solvent wipe with an industrial degreaser to remove all residues.

  2. Mixing

Combine Part A and Part B in a 1:1 ratio by volume. It is essential that this ratio is measured accurately.

    Thorough Mixing Technique

Mix thoroughly with a spatula or mechanical mixer until a uniform, light yellow colour is achieved. Pay close attention to scraping the sides and bottom of the mixing container to ensure all material is fully combined. Poor mixing will result in a weak bond and may prevent the product from curing correctly.

Work Time: You have approximately 45 minutes to apply the mixed product at 25°C. This time will be shorter at higher temperatures.
  3. Application & Curing

Apply the mixed gel to the prepared surfaces using a trowel or spatula. For bonding applications, press the surfaces firmly together to ensure full contact. For repairs, work the material into the void to eliminate air pockets.

Pro Tip: For structural bonding, clamp components securely to prevent movement during the initial cure. Remove any excess adhesive before it begins to set for a cleaner finish.
Curing: Allow to cure for a minimum of 24 hours at 25°C before subjecting the bond to any load. Full chemical resistance and ultimate strength is typically achieved after 7 days.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Application below 10°C minimum temperature. This will compromise the cure and final properties.
  • Not for: Direct application over existing coatings, paint, or galvanizing. These must be fully removed for Megapoxy 69 to achieve its high bond strengths.
  • Caution: Inaccurate mixing ratios or insufficient mixing of Part A and Part B will result in lower physical properties of the cured system and may lead to unsatisfactory cure or discolouration.

Safety and handling

DANGER: Megapoxy 69 is a Scheduled Poison (S5. Caution). Part A is classified as a Class 9 Miscellaneous Dangerous Good for transport.

Personal protective equipment

Wear safety shoes, nitrile rubber gloves, and safety glasses. Wear protective clothing and suitable respiratory protection where vapours or mists are generated. Ensure eyewash stations and safety showers are readily accessible.

Ventilation

Natural ventilation is adequate under normal use conditions. Avoid breathing dust, fumes, or vapours.

First aid

  • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. Keep at rest. Seek medical advice if effects persist.
  • Skin Contact: Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Flush skin and hair with plenty of soap and water for 15 minutes. Seek medical advice if irritation or rash occurs.
  • Eye Contact: Immediately irrigate with copious quantities of water for at least 15 minutes, holding eyelids open. Remove contact lenses if present. Seek urgent medical assistance; Part B can cause corneal burns and permanent injury.
  • Ingestion: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give a glass of water. Seek medical advice.

Storage and disposal

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, out of direct sunlight and away from foodstuffs, incompatible materials (oxidising agents), heat, and ignition sources. Keep containers upright and closed when not in use. Dispose of contents and containers in accordance with local, regional, national, and international regulations. Contaminated work clothing should not leave the workplace.

Substrate guide

Proper surface preparation is fundamental for Megapoxy 69 to achieve its documented high bond strengths and ensure long-term performance.

Concrete

Surface prep: Ensure the concrete is free from grease, oil, and surface laitance. Laitance removal is best achieved through mechanical abrasion such as scabbling, grit blasting, or grinding. If mechanical methods are not feasible, acid etching can be performed using a 1:1 hydrochloric acid to water solution applied at 0.5 L/m², allowed to react for 10 minutes, then thoroughly washed and scrubbed. For maximum adhesion, the concrete must be surface dry before application. For painted concrete, flame-cleaning or scutching to remove paint, followed by diamond grinding or scabbling, is required.

Primer: Not required.

Metal (Steel, Aluminium)

Surface prep: Metals must be grit blasted to AS 1627.2.2002 for optimal results. Alternatively, mechanically abrade the surface to a clean, bright metal finish. Degrease the surface thoroughly after abrasion. Wire brushing is not adequate for achieving sufficient adhesion. For painted or galvanised metals, remove all coatings using a good quality paint stripper, then follow with grit blasting or grinding to a bright metal finish.

Primer: Not required.
