When a tiling project demands superior flexibility, a bright white finish, and a reliable hold for large format tiles, ARDEX X 17 White delivers. It prevents common failures like tile delamination and cracking over substrates with minor movement. The result is a durable, visually consistent tiled surface that meets both aesthetic and performance expectations.

Why this product exists

ARDEX X 17 White is a polymer-fortified, cement-based tile adhesive engineered to address the challenges of modern tiling. Its specialised formulation provides mastic-type properties, allowing for an extended open time and a non-slump characteristic critical for installing heavy or large format tiles, particularly on vertical surfaces. It ensures the adhesive maintains its position without slippage during installation, reducing rework and ensuring alignment. This adhesive provides the necessary flexibility for residential and light commercial wall and floor applications where substrates might experience minor movement.

The numbers that matter

  • S1 Flexibility (ISO 13007): This classification indicates a highly flexible adhesive, capable of accommodating lateral deformation of at least 2.5 mm. On residential timber-framed floors prepared with Ceramic Tile Underlay (CTU), this flexibility helps absorb substrate movement, preventing tiles from cracking or debonding.
  • C2 TE Classification (ISO 13007): The 'C2' signifies an improved cementitious adhesive with enhanced adhesion. 'T' denotes its thixotropic, non-slump properties, ensuring large or heavy tiles stay put on walls. 'E' means an extended open time of 30 minutes, allowing installers more time for precise tile placement without skinning over.
  • Tensile Adhesion Strength (≥1.0 MPa): Consistently exceeding 1.0 MPa across dry, water immersion, heat, and freeze-thaw conditions means a robust, lasting bond. This strength protects against common environmental stressors that can degrade lesser adhesives, ensuring durability in internal and sheltered external settings.

What it's like to use

ARDEX X 17 White mixes easily to a thick, creamy consistency using an electric drill and paddle. A two-stage mixing process—mixing for two minutes, resting for five, then mixing again for two minutes—ensures a lump-free, workable mortar with a three-hour pot life. This allows for efficient work over larger areas. Tiles must be pressed firmly into the wet bed, sliding them perpendicular to the trowel notches to achieve 100% back-of-tile coverage. For tiles with ribbed or keyed profiles, back-buttering ensures complete adhesion. Grouting can typically commence after 24 hours, but dense tiles or colder, humid conditions may require a longer cure. All tools should be cleaned with water immediately after use to prevent adhesive hardening.

Where this product excels

  • Large Format Porcelain Tiling: Its non-slump properties and extended open time make it ideal for fixing heavy, large format porcelain and fully vitrified tiles to both walls and floors in residential and light commercial spaces.
  • Flexible Substrates: Excels when tiling over Ceramic Tile Underlay (CTU) on timber-framed floors or over Ardex liquid applied waterproofing membranes, where its S1 flexibility accommodates minor substrate movement and prevents tile delamination.
  • White Finish Applications: The bright white formulation is perfect for light-coloured or translucent tiles, preventing adhesive show-through and providing a clean, crisp finish when paired with a white grout.

How it fits in a real system

ARDEX X 17 White typically functions as the bonding layer between the prepared substrate and the tiles. For porous substrates like concrete or fibre-cement sheeting, priming with ARDEX Multiprime is essential to regulate absorption and improve bond strength. When installing over ARDEX liquid applied waterproofing membranes, this adhesive forms a durable bond once the membrane has fully cured. After tiles are fixed and the adhesive has sufficiently hardened, typically 24 hours later, the joints should be filled with an appropriate ARDEX grout. Critical movement joints must be sealed with an approved sealant, not grout, to maintain system integrity according to AS 3958.

Choose this when

  • When installing large format, heavy, or fully vitrified tiles on walls and floors in residential or light commercial projects.
  • When the substrate (such as CTU on timber floors or waterproofing membranes) requires an S1 flexible adhesive to accommodate minor movement.
  • When a bright white adhesive is preferred to complement light-coloured tiles or grout, ensuring a clean aesthetic.
  • When an extended open time is beneficial for precise tile placement and managing larger areas.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: Continuous immersion applications like swimming pools or tanks; other ARDEX systems are specifically designed for these environments.
  • Not for: Direct application over metal surfaces or floors with excessive deflection greater than L/500 (joist span divided by 500); check structural requirements.
  • Not for: Moisture-sensitive natural stones; always refer to the specific products within the ARDEX Natural Stone System for these applications.
  • Not for: Direct application over timber or other substrates prone to significant shrinkage or movement without an appropriate underlay system like Ceramic Tile Underlay (CTU).

ARDEX X 17 White carries an ISO 13007 C2 TE S1 classification, certifying it as an improved, thixotropic (non-slump), extended open time, flexible cementitious adhesive. This compliance ensures it meets rigorous performance standards for bond strength, workability, and flexibility under various conditions. Additionally, it meets Green Building Council of Australia Green Star requirements for Ceramic Tile Adhesives, supporting sustainable building practices.

Choosing between ARDEX X 17 White and ARDEX X 18

While ARDEX X 18 is formulated for heavy commercial applications, external use, and continuous immersion areas like swimming pools, ARDEX X 17 White is specifically designed for residential and light commercial wall and floor tiling. Both offer S1 flexibility, but X 17 White delivers a bright white finish and is tailored for projects where continuous immersion is not a requirement, making it a suitable choice for internal and sheltered external areas with standard demands for flexibility and high bond strength.

Frequently asked questions

Can ARDEX X 17 White be used for large format and heavy tiles?

Yes, ARDEX X 17 White is specifically formulated as a non-slump adhesive. This property makes it suitable for securely fixing large format and heavy tiles on both walls and floors without tile movement during installation.

What does the S1 flexibility classification mean for my tiling project?

The S1 classification signifies superior flexibility, achieving tensile adhesion strengths of ≥1.0 MPa across varied conditions including dry, water immersion, heat, and freeze/thaw. This level of flexibility helps prevent tile cracking and delamination by accommodating minor substrate movement common in residential and light commercial settings, both internal and external.

Is ARDEX X 17 White suitable for continuous immersion applications like swimming pools?

No, ARDEX X 17 White is not recommended for continuous immersion applications such as swimming pools or tanks. These demanding environments require alternative ARDEX systems specifically designed for constant water exposure to ensure long-term performance and prevent failure.

Can I use this adhesive over timber floors?

No, ARDEX X 17 White should not be used directly over timber or other substrates prone to significant shrinkage and movement. For such applications, ARDEX offers other systems designed to manage these dynamic substrate conditions effectively.

Applying Ardex X 17: Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Substrate Preparation

Ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and structurally sound. Mechanically prepare any dense, non-porous surfaces like sealed concrete. Prime porous substrates such as fibre-cement sheet with Ardex Multiprime as required.

  2. Mixing

Add a 20kg bag of Ardex X 17 powder to approximately 6-6.5 litres of clean water. Mix thoroughly with a paddle mixer for at least 2 minutes to a lump-free, creamy consistency. Let the mix stand for 5 minutes, then give it a final 2-minute mix.

Pot Life: The mixed adhesive is workable for approximately 3 hours at 23°C. Do not try to reconstitute by adding more water.
  3. Application & Fixing

Apply the adhesive to the substrate with the appropriate notched trowel for the tile size. Press tiles firmly into the wet mortar and slide them at a right angle to the trowel lines to ensure full coverage. Check for voids periodically by lifting a tile.

Pro Tip: Only spread as much adhesive as can be tiled within the 30-minute open time. For large or keyed-back tiles, butter the back of the tile to guarantee 100% coverage and a solid bed.

Product limitations

  • Not for: Continuous immersion applications, such as swimming pools or tanks, as the formulation is not designed for constant water exposure.
  • Not for: Direct application over metal or similar non-porous, unstable surfaces without specific preparation or alternative systems.
  • Not for: Floors with deflection exceeding joist span divided by 500, or over substrates prone to significant shrinkage and movement like structural timber.
  • Caution: For moisture-sensitive natural stones, refer to ARDEX Natural Stone System products. Dimensional instability in natural stone may require specific testing and adhesive selection.
