Preparing concrete and steel for repair demands more than just a clean surface. It requires a bond that holds, a barrier against moisture, and protection from ongoing corrosion. EverKrete Primer delivers this foundation, ensuring the EverKrete concrete repair system performs as designed. It's the multi-functional first step that secures the repair, preventing delamination and pinholes from the start.

Why this product exists

EverKrete Primer was engineered as the critical first step in the EverKrete concrete repair system. It addresses common site challenges by preparing both concrete and steel substrates. This single-component modified polymer promotes superior adhesion, creates an effective vapour barrier, and halts corrosion on tightly adhered rust. By eliminating pinholes caused by substrate outgassing, it ensures a dense, well-bonded repair, preventing premature delamination and future repair failures.

The numbers that matter

EverKrete Primer's performance is built on clear technical specifications:

  • A tack-free time of 1-2 hours means the EverKrete repair mortar can be applied quickly, minimising downtime on site.
  • Its consumption rate of 5-8 m²/litre offers efficient coverage, making it a cost-effective choice for large-scale repairs.
  • A solids content of 30-34% ensures a robust, film-forming bond coat with excellent penetrating properties.
  • With a vapour transmission rate of 0.032 perms (ASTM E 96-80), it creates an effective barrier against moisture, protecting the repair and subsequent finishes.

What it's like to use

Using EverKrete Primer is straightforward. It’s a single-component product, eliminating the need for on-site mixing. After thorough surface preparation, which may include dry diamond grinding for a sound, porous profile, it is brushed or rolled onto the substrate. The goal is a thin, even coating worked into the surface, free from puddles or ridges. The primer becomes tacky within 1-2 hours, indicating readiness for the EverKrete repair mortar application, which must follow on the same day. For wet clean-up, use Acetone; cured material requires mechanical removal.

Where this product excels

EverKrete Primer excels in civil construction and flooring projects requiring robust concrete repair. It is particularly suited for preparing concrete substrates that will be membrane-covered or tiled, ensuring maximum adhesion for the EverKrete 102 repair mortar. This includes repairing spalls on concrete slabs, preparing subfloors before levelling or coating, and addressing masonry and render repairs where a strong, moisture-resistant bond is crucial for the long-term integrity of the repair system.

How it fits in a real system

EverKrete Primer is the essential first step in the EverKrete concrete repair system. Applied directly to prepared concrete or steel, it forms the critical bond layer before the application of EverKrete 102 structural repair mortar. This sequence ensures the repair mortar adheres completely, preventing delamination and providing a durable, integrated repair solution for the entire system.

Choose this when

  • When preparing concrete or steel for the EverKrete concrete repair system.
  • When the repair requires a penetrating bond agent to ensure maximum adhesion and prevent pinholes in the repair mortar.
  • When there is tightly adhered rust on steel reinforcement that needs corrosion inhibition prior to repair.
  • When the project demands a vapour barrier to protect subsequent finishes or prevent moisture migration through the repair.
  • When the concrete substrate will be membrane-covered or tiled after the repair, requiring a stable, well-bonded foundation.

Don't use this when

  • Not for: standalone repair; it is solely a primer and part of the EverKrete system.
  • Not for: exposed areas subject to long-term UV exposure without overcoating due to its limited UV resistance.
  • Not for: damp, wet, or contaminated substrates, or when rain is imminent. Substrates must be dry and clean.
  • Not for: application in temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C. For low-temperature applications, consider EverKrete 102 resin with EverKrete Accelerator.
  • Not for: use as a generic primer for all types of repair mortars or coatings outside of the EverKrete system. For general concrete priming, consider Megapoxy H. For dedicated waterproofing priming, Everflex VBS Bitumen Primer is a more suitable option.

EverKrete Primer is classified as a Dangerous Good (Class 3 Flammable Liquid, Packing Group III), requiring careful handling and storage. Always refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for detailed health and safety information, including recommended PPE and first aid measures. It should be stored away from heat and ignition sources, in sealed containers, and resealed with nitrogen after opening to prevent moisture contamination.

Frequently asked questions

Can EverKrete Primer be applied to damp concrete?

No, EverKrete Primer must only be applied to dry substrates. Application on damp or wet surfaces can lead to poor adhesion and delamination of the repair system, compromising its integrity.

How does EverKrete Primer prevent pinholes in concrete repairs?

The primer works as a penetrating bonding agent that helps eliminate pinholes caused by outgassing from the substrate. This ensures a smoother, more uniform finish when EverKrete Mortar is applied.

What is the working window for EverKrete Primer after application?

EverKrete Primer is tack-free in 1 to 2 hours at 25°C and 60% RH. EverKrete Mortar should be applied while the primer is still tacky and clean, ideally on the same day as priming, to ensure optimal bond strength.

Is this primer suitable for steel with rust?

Yes, EverKrete Primer may be used over tightly adhered rust on steel surfaces to halt the advancement of corrosion. Ensure any loose rust is removed by blast or mechanical means before priming.
