Frequently Asked Questions

Is DOWSIL™ 795 suitable for structural glazing?

Yes. DOWSIL™ 795 is widely used in structural silicone glazing (SSG) applications and has been approved for use in curtain wall systems globally. It bonds glass to metal, aluminium, or structural framing with excellent long-term durability.

Does it require a primer for adhesion?

DOWSIL™ 795 offers excellent unprimed adhesion to many substrates, including glass and anodised aluminium. However, Dow recommends adhesion testing, and primers (e.g., DOWSIL™ 1200 OS) may be required for porous or coated surfaces depending on site conditions.

Can DOWSIL™ 795 be painted?

No. Like most silicones, DOWSIL™ 795 cannot be painted. It is available in a range of colours to match common construction materials. Choose the correct colour during planning to avoid coating requirements.

What is the skin and cure time?

DOWSIL™ 795 becomes tack-free in 30–60 minutes, with a tooling window of around 10–20 minutes. Full cure is achieved in 7–14 days depending on joint depth, temperature, and humidity. Approx. 3 mm cures in 24 hours at 25°C, 50% RH.

Is it resistant to weather, UV, and salt spray?

Yes — DOWSIL™ 795 is formulated for long-term exterior exposure. It resists UV radiation, extreme temperatures, salt spray, acid rain, and ozone. It is ideal for coastal buildings, high-rise façades, and industrial zones.

What’s the shelf life and storage condition?

Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture when stored unopened below 30°C. Store in a dry, well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight. Always check date codes before use for critical projects.

How to Apply DOWSIL™ 795 Silicone Sealant

  1. 1. Surface Preparation

Ensure all substrates are structurally sound, clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, coatings, and contaminants. Use a two-cloth solvent wipe method with isopropyl alcohol (IPA), acetone, or Dow R40 Cleaner.

Pro Tip: Use Dow 1200 OS Primer for porous or powder-coated substrates and always perform an adhesion test on site.
  2. 2. Masking & Joint Design

Apply masking tape along joint edges for clean lines. Use backer rod (PE or PU foam) to control joint depth and prevent 3-sided adhesion. Recommended joint width-to-depth ratio is 2:1 for optimal movement capability.

Pro Tip: Do not apply sealant without backing material — it reduces performance and joint longevity.
  3. 3. Sealant Application

Apply DOWSIL™ 795 using a caulking gun at a steady rate. Hold nozzle at a 45° angle and ensure the bead is forced into contact with both sides of the joint. Avoid air entrapment. Tool within 10–20 minutes to smooth surface and ensure full bond.

Timing: Tool within 20 minutes. Tack-free in 30–60 minutes. Full cure: 7–14 days depending on joint depth, temperature, and humidity.
Pro Tip: Avoid tooling with soapy water — use clean, dry tooling tools for best finish and performance.
  4. 4. Finishing & Clean-Up

Immediately remove masking tape after tooling. Clean excess sealant with solvent (before skinning) and wipe tools with cloth. Cured sealant must be removed mechanically.

Pro Tip: Dispose of waste sealant and solvent-soaked rags safely. Avoid skin contact with uncured sealant during extended use.

Limitations & Safety

Limitations of Use

  • Not suitable for aquarium glazing or food contact surfaces
  • Do not apply to surfaces with frost, condensation, or standing water
  • Not paintable – colour must be selected prior to application
  • Incompatible with bituminous or tar-based materials
  • Not recommended for sealing polystyrene foams or polyethylene plastics
  • Do not use in underground or submerged conditions (e.g. tanks, immersed expansion joints)
  • Do not use for structural bonding of glass without full project validation by Dow

Health & Safety Guidance

🧤
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Use protective gloves, safety glasses, and long-sleeve workwear when applying. Avoid prolonged skin contact. Wash hands after use and before eating or drinking.

💨
Ventilation

Use in well-ventilated areas. While VOC content is low, confined space application should follow standard industrial ventilation procedures.

🔥
Fire & Storage Safety

Product is non-flammable. Store in cool, dry conditions below 30°C. Keep out of direct sunlight and sealed in original packaging.

⛑️
Emergency First Aid
  • Eyes: Rinse with clean water for 15 minutes and seek medical advice.
  • Skin: Wipe off excess, then wash thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If irritation persists, seek medical help.
  • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth and contact a poison control centre or doctor.

Note: Refer to the product SDS for full risk and exposure management details.

Adhesion & Surface Preparation Guide

Glass (Annealed, Toughened, Laminated)

Clean using a two-cloth solvent wipe (e.g. IPA or DOWSIL™ R40 Cleaner) until no residue remains. Avoid touching cleaned surface.

No primer typically required

Excellent unprimed adhesion. Conduct adhesion testing on site-specific glass coatings or films.

Anodised or Powder-Coated Aluminium

Wipe with clean cloth and compatible solvent. If powder-coated, lightly abrade glossy surfaces and repeat solvent wipe.

Primer may be required

Use DOWSIL™ 1200 OS Primer where surface variability or abrasion is present. Conduct site testing for powder-coated or painted frames.

Concrete, Brick, and Precast Panels

Ensure fully cured (min. 28 days), dry, and free of dust, laitance, or surface contaminants. Clean with stiff brush or light abrasive pad, then solvent wipe.

Primer required

Prime with DOWSIL™ 1200 OS Primer to ensure adhesion to porous substrates. Allow to dry before sealant application.

Stainless Steel & Galvanised Metal

Lightly abrade, then wipe with clean cloth and approved solvent (e.g. Xylene or IPA). Ensure dry, clean finish before sealing.

Primer may be required

Adhesion is generally good, but primer may improve performance in critical joints. Use DOWSIL™ 1200 OS Primer as needed.

Plastics (Polycarbonate, PVC, etc.)

Clean with mild solvent (test compatibility). Lightly abrade if surface is glossy. Confirm chemical compatibility before use.

Primer often recommended

Use primer where adhesion is uncertain. Dow recommends performing field adhesion tests prior to installation.

Painted or Coated Substrates

Ensure paint is fully cured, non-chalking, and adherent. Wipe clean with solvent cloth. Avoid loose coatings.

Primer optional based on coating

Adhesion varies by paint chemistry. Always test. Use primer if adhesion is poor or substrate is unknown.
