Duram Azcoseal: A Technical Overview

Duram Azcoseal is a premium, clear acrylic sealer in a solvent solution that deeply penetrates porous substrates and cures to a tough, resilient satin finish. Formulated with cross-linking technology, it enhances adhesion for subsequent membranes and coatings, ensuring long-lasting waterproofing systems. Fast drying (touch dry in 1–2 hours) with a wide topcoat window, it suits professional schedules and minimises downtime on site.

Core Features & Specifications

  • Quick drying – usually touch dry within 1–2 hours, ready for recoat within 24 hours.
  • Deeply penetrative, binding dust and friable surfaces for strong substrate consolidation.
  • Provides a waterproof barrier and resists wind-driven rain and salt spray.
  • Single-component, easy-to-apply formula suitable for brush, roller, or spray.
  • Enhances adhesion and waterproofing performance of subsequent membranes.
  • UV resistant and dries to an attractive, clear satin (wet-look) finish.

The Duram Azcoseal Advantage

  • Minimises surface fragmentation, reducing future maintenance costs.
  • Cost-effective coverage – approximately 4m² per litre per coat.
  • Compatible primer for Duram Multithane, Duram 195, Durabit, and Azcothane systems.
  • Suitable for most porous substrates, including concrete, brick, blockwork, FC sheet, pavers, and sandstone.
  • Designed for professional use with predictable results on every job.

Proactive Troubleshooting

Scenario: Applying Over Moist or Saturated Substrates

Potential Outcome: Trapped moisture may cause whitening, bubbling, or loss of adhesion under membranes.

Adheseal Best Practice: Always ensure surfaces are fully dry, stable, and free of seeping moisture before application. For high moisture risk, use Duram Primeseal MC as an alternative primer.

Scenario: Using on Particleboard or Non-Porous Surfaces

Potential Outcome: Poor adhesion and potential coating delamination.

Adheseal Best Practice: Avoid using on particle/chipboard and glossy surfaces. Choose a compatible primer like Primeseal MC for difficult substrates.

Applications in Practice: Trade Scenarios

For Waterproofers (Specifier/Installer): Priming Tilt-Up Panels

The Professional's Challenge

Tilt-up slabs and low-porosity concrete can be difficult to prime evenly, leading to patchy membrane adhesion.

The Adheseal Solution

Azcoseal’s low viscosity penetrates dense concrete, filling pores and creating a uniform surface for membrane application.

Best Practice Note

Apply one full coat at 4m² per litre, allow complete solvent flash-off before applying membranes for optimal bond strength.

For Builders (Business Owner): Sealing Masonry Externally

The Professional's Challenge

Weatherproofing face brick and blockwork quickly without altering appearance.

The Adheseal Solution

Two coats of Azcoseal provide a clear, satin finish that resists rain and salt spray while maintaining the natural look of the substrate.

Best Practice Note

Work sealer well into the surface using a low-pressure spray or roller for consistent coverage and protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Duram Azcoseal be used as a primer under polyurethane membranes?

Yes, Azcoseal is compatible as a primer for polyurethane membranes like Duram Multithane. Ensure full solvent flash-off before applying to prevent bubbling.

What coverage rate should I expect on porous concrete?

Expect approximately 4m² per litre per coat on standard porous concrete. Highly absorbent substrates may require additional coats for full penetration and binding.

Applying Duram Azcoseal: Enhanced Protocols & Best Practices

  1. Surface Preparation

Ensure substrate is clean, dry, sound, and free of contaminants. Remove efflorescence, mold, and loose material using pressure washing or mechanical means.

Pro Tip: Fill cracks with Duram sealant and allow to cure before applying Azcoseal for a uniform, sealed surface.
  2. Application

    Brush/Roller

Apply evenly at 4 m²/L per coat. Work well into substrate to ensure penetration.

    Spray

Use low-pressure spray equipment for large areas. Back-roll for even film and penetration.

Timing: Touch dry in 1–2 hours, recoat within 24 hours. Full cure within 24 hours at 25 °C, 50% RH.
Pro Tip: Do not apply if rain is imminent. Allow solvents to fully evaporate before overcoating with membranes or coatings to avoid bubbling.
  3. Cleanup

Clean tools and adjacent surfaces with Duram Solvent before product cures. Wash hands with warm soapy water and a stiff-bristle brush.

Limitations & Safety

Product Limitations

!
Not recommended for particle board, chipboard, glazed tiles, terrazzo, or very smooth concrete. For these substrates, use Duram Primeseal MC as a compatible primer.
!
Do not apply to wet, seeping, or saturated substrates. Entrapped moisture can cause whitening, blistering, or coating failure.
!
Product is not a vapour barrier and should only be used where risk of rising moisture is low.
!
Cured surface may be slippery when wet — take care in pedestrian areas.
!
If overcoating with membranes, ensure solvents have fully evaporated to prevent bubbling of topcoat.

Safety & Handling Requirements

🧤
Personal Protective Equipment

Wear solvent-resistant gloves, protective eyewear, and long-sleeved clothing to avoid skin and eye contact. Use an organic vapour respirator when working in poorly ventilated areas.

🌬️
Ventilation Requirements

Use in well-ventilated areas only. Provide mechanical ventilation or open windows and doors to disperse vapours. Avoid enclosed spaces without airflow.

🔥
Fire & Handling Precautions

Class 3 flammable liquid. Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Do not smoke during application. Store in a cool, dry place away from ignition sources.

⛑️
Emergency First Aid
Eyes:
Flush immediately with plenty of clean water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
Skin:
Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.
Inhaled:
Move to fresh air immediately. Keep at rest and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
Swallowed:
Do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse mouth and seek urgent medical attention.

Seek medical attention immediately in all cases of serious exposure.

Duram Azcoseal Application Guide

Concrete, Brick, and Masonry

Ensure surfaces are sound, stable, clean, and completely dry. Remove dust, laitance, and efflorescence by pressure washing and allow to dry. Fill cracks and voids with suitable Duram repair mortar before priming.

Self-priming on porous concrete, brick, and blockwork

Apply Azcoseal directly in two coats at 4 m²/L per coat for best sealing performance.

Tilt-Up & Low-Porosity Concrete

Mechanically prepare smooth or dense surfaces to open the pores. Remove bond breakers or curing compounds prior to priming.

Azcoseal recommended for optimal membrane adhesion

Apply one uniform coat and allow full solvent flash-off before overcoating with membranes.

Pavers, Sandstone, and Decorative Masonry

Test a small inconspicuous area first, as solvent action may draw salts to the surface and cause discolouration. Thoroughly clean and dry before application.

No additional primer required

Apply two coats for weatherproofing or three coats for a high-build, trafficable wet-look finish.
