RLA Luminous SSG is a standard-set ceramic tile grout for internal and external tile joints from 1 mm to 15 mm. It has a respirable silica free formulation, is Global Green Tag Certified, is classified CG2W to ISO 13007 and is suitable for immersed applications.
What it does
Use it to grout porcelain, ceramic, terrazzo, slate, quarry tiles, glass, mosaics and natural stone excluding moisture-sensitive types. Its shrinkage-compensated formulation, reduced water absorption, smooth finish and built-in water and mould resistance support colour uniformity, reduced dirt retention and long-term appearance.

Installation controls
Allow the tile adhesive to cure before grouting, remove spacers and clear the full joint depth of dust, excess adhesive and loose material. Add the powder to clean water, mix with a low-speed paddle until smooth, stand for 3 minutes and lightly remix. Compact the grout through the full joint depth, wait approximately 15–30 minutes before cleaning, then use a well-rinsed damp sponge with minimal water.
Important limitations
- Apply only when the surface and ambient temperature are between 5°C and 35°C.
- Do not use for chemical-resistant joints; refer to RLA Luminous Epoxy Grout.
- Exclude moisture-sensitive natural stone. Some absorbent, textured or porous tiles can discolour or stain; test textured or matte finishes and seal porous terracotta before grouting.
- Use a suitable RLA silicone sealant for expansion or movement joints.
- For facades, swimming pools, timber floors, heavy-traffic areas or surfaces requiring frequent cleaning.

How to apply
- Allow the adhesive to cure. Ensure the tile adhesive has sufficiently cured or set. Thick beds of adhesive must fully cure before grouting.
- Prepare the joints. Remove dust, excess adhesive, bedding mortar, loose material, contaminants and all spacers so the grout can fill the full joint depth. Test cleaning on textured or matte tiles before starting.
- Measure the water. Use 240 mL per kg of grout, 960 mL per 4 kg bag or 2.4 litres per 10 kg bag.
- Mix the grout. Gradually add powder to clean water while mixing continuously with a low-speed electric mixer and paddle until smooth, lump-free and creamy. Stand for 3 minutes, then lightly remix.
- Fill the joints. Work the grout into the joints with a rubber trowel and compact firmly through the full depth. Remove excess from the tile surface with the rubber float.
- Clean after 15–30 minutes. Once the grout has firmed sufficiently, wipe diagonally across the joints with a well-rinsed damp sponge. Use minimal water to reduce water float, shade variation and shrinkage; two water containers are recommended.
- Finish the surface. Allow the grout to firm, then polish remaining dry film from the tile surface with a dry cloth.
- Protect and cure. For external work, protect the surface from extreme climate conditions during application, cleaning and drying or curing. At 23°C and 50% relative humidity, allow 24 hours for light foot traffic and 3 days for full service.
- Clean equipment. Wash equipment with water immediately after use.
Limitations
- Application temperature: Do not apply when the surface or ambient temperature is below 5°C or above 35°C.
- Chemical-resistant joints: Do not use RLA Luminous SSG; refer to RLA Luminous Epoxy Grout.
- Moisture-sensitive and porous tiles: Moisture-sensitive natural stone is excluded. Some moisture-sensitive, absorbent or textured tiles can discolour; test textured or matte finishes before grouting and seal porous terracotta before use.
- Movement joints: Use a suitable RLA silicone sealant for expansion or movement joints.
- Demanding conditions: For facades, swimming pools, timber floors, heavy-traffic areas or surfaces requiring frequent cleaning, incorporate RLA Plastinex into the mixing liquid or consider RLA Luminous EF Grout or RLA Luminous Epoxy Grout as directed by their relevant TDS.
- External exposure: Protect surfaces from extreme climate conditions throughout application, cleaning and drying or curing.
- Drying conditions: The stated times are based on 23°C and 50% relative humidity. Allow longer for dense tiles, wider joints, cooler temperatures or high relative humidity.
- Efflorescence: This is a natural characteristic of Portland cement products and is excluded from warranty coverage. The TDS suggests RLA Luminous EF Grout or RLA Luminous Epoxy Grout to minimise potential efflorescence from the grouting system.
Safety
Danger: The SDS classifies the product as hazardous and states that it causes skin irritation, causes serious eye damage and may cause respiratory irritation.
- Avoid breathing dust and use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
- Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and eye or face protection. Select any additional PPE, including respiratory protection, through the work risk assessment and current SDS.
- If the product enters the eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes, remove contact lenses if present and easy to do, continue rinsing and immediately call a Poisons Information Centre or doctor.
- Keep out of reach of children. Store locked up in a well-ventilated place with the container tightly closed.
